Summary

As plain-clothes men go, Dangerous Davies looks like a non-starter. The small fry of petty larceny and minor disturbances in the backwaters of north-west London are his daily round. His philosophising Welsh drinking companion Mod, his outsized and unruly dog Kitty, his quarrels with his landlady Mrs Fulljames - none of these bodes well for the efficient solving of crimes and the outwitting of villainy.

But Davies is encouraged by his beautiful friend, Jemma, and every so often he stumbles upon something really big.

Excellent book, superbly narrated.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, lovely story, nicely narrated. Dangerous is brought to life I'm sure, just as Leslie Thomas intended. More please!

Excellent story

I’ve enjoyed listening to this very much. An excellent story which is well read by the narrator.

Very funny with a good plot

I really enjoyed revisiting this book that I’d read some 24 years ago. It was very funny in places and had a good plot to carry you along. Would recommend to most but not the very young as it’s just a touch rude in places.

Very funny

This book is so funny, politically incorrect and a great story. You can tell that it is set a few years ago, the character of Dangerous Davies is an excellent creation. He comes across as a total pessimist but you can't help but want him to catch the person responsible for the murder. The other character's are also excellently created and feel like people we have all come across. I loved it

Well worth a listen

This book is hilarious, so much better than the TV series (which after seeing the first episode, I didn't bother with again). Brilliant to listen to on a long car journey with no children. I first listened to this book years ago on tape when it was narrated by Bernard Cribbins and I cried with laughter. Mr. Cribbins is my preferred narrator but Alexander John makes a fair job of it. The characters are wonderful and the plot darkly comical.

Wonderfully understatedly comedic Detective story.

Detective fiction has its fair share of atypical characters, but 'Dangerous' Davies (and his dog, Kitty..!) is one of the most interesting I've come across in a while. The story follows Davies as he lumbers from error to crisis, sometimes through his own fault, sometimes due to his enemies machinations, and sometimes simply the result of his perennial bad luck. He takes up an old case against the wishes of his superiors, and doggedly follows the stone cold trail all over North London, pausing only for his regular boozy sessions with his best mate in the local pub, or for dinner, courtesy of his batty old landlady. The narration is first class, with seemingly every kind of accent and voice portrayed seamlessly. I'd highly recommend this for anyone wanting a break from modern detective procedurals, and to experience a tale of a bygone era of old fashioned London policing. 9/10, Definitely recommend.

Leslie Thomas at his brilliant best

A gripping storyline coupled with gentle humour guaranteed to make you smile and in places laugh out loud. Highly recommended.

Brilliantly funny tale.

A laugh out loud tale of an incompetent but kindly policeman, who triumphs in the end against considerable opposition from his boss.
