About this listen

Ilea likes punching things. And eating.

Unfortunately, there aren’t too many career options for hungry brawlers. Instead, the plan is to quit her crappy fast-food job, go to college, and become a fully functioning member of society. Essentially—a fate worse than death.

So maybe it's lucky that she wakes up one day in a strange world where a bunch of fantasy monsters are trying to kill her?

On the bright side, "killing those monsters right back" is now a viable career path! For she soon discovers her new home runs on a set of game-like rules that will allow her to punch things harder than in her wildest dreams. Well, maybe not her wildest dreams, but it’s close.

With no quest to follow, no guide to show her the way, and no real desire to be a Hero—Ilea embarks on a journey to discover a world full of magic. Magic she can use to fight even bigger monsters.

She’s struggling to survive, has no idea what will happen next, and is loving every minute of it. Except, and sometimes also, when she’s poisoned and/or has set herself on fire. It’s complicated.

I’ve got to give it to the author and the talent. If anyone has enjoyed the Wandering Inn on audible. Imagine Rioja Griffen and take all the hate out of her and replace it with joy of life. Great progression can’t wait for more.

This was a great book. I enjoyed the setting in a fairly typical fantasy land. I liked the characters who were generally upbeat and fun as well as being a decent collection of different people. I thought the plot was good although it doesn't have an overarching narrative that I could see.

The only downside is the endless chuckling/giggling/laughing. That covers 90% of the dialogue. Person explodes = laughter. Inane comment = giggling. Being burned alive = laughter, again. After a while this really got to me.

Other than that it was a great book though.

Really good story. Fun adult humour throughout.
I can't wait for book 2.

Andrea Parsneau does a fantastic job bringing the world to life.

Brilliant

While this won't win any literary awards it is still very well written and a great LitRPG romp to listen through. The protagonist gains power and levels extremely fast, the npcs are interesting and the combat descriptions are somewhere between gory and tongue in cheek.

I did enjoy this a lot. Narration was also great.

Very fast character progression.

This is my first taste of a “LitRPG” novel, and it holds up to the tropes and quality you would expect of any Isekai manga/anime. Andrea’s narration is solid with her tone shifts and characterisations are spot on. For the sheer volume of hours you get in this book, it’s definitely worth the price. Easy listening and it isn’t heavy handed with its world building which keeps it fun and easy to follow, but always feeds nuggets of information that indicate a larger landscape to explore.

Great western Isekai
