Story
‘I never once attended a Sunday morning church service in Stanford. There was always the feeling that they weren’t aimed at families like ours.’ Pam Ayres was the sixth child in a hard-up family who lived in a council house, her parents’ generation were harrowed by the war. Yet they lived by the green in the village of Stanford in the Vale, where everything you needed was within walking distance and the sound of motorcars was rarely heard.

Gentle Humour at its Best
Ayres and Whitehead, a bit like Dench and Palmer, go together very well. This made me smile rather than laugh out loud, but I smiled a lot! Pam's distinctive Oxfordshire burr contrasts well with both Whitehead's rather dry 'middle England' accent and the posh voice of Felicity, the only other person in it.
I think it is especially appealing to people of a 'certain age' - approximately Pam's- who remember the world as it used to be, suet duffs to line your stomach, picking blackberries , walking to school in the snow, and,of course, the good hiding!
It is a long listen but easily broken up into episodes so can be dealt with easily in segments, each complete on its own. There is a little bit of repetition but not much.
One of the most enjoyable audio downloads I have listened to.
