Sloppy writing, strange narration
- By Mark Gjøl on 07-12-19
Summary
A side quest adventure in the same world as the best-selling Awaken Online series. This story takes place after the end of Awaken Online: Precipice.
Riley's real-life took a nosedive after her confrontation with Alex. The girls at school torment her and she feels powerless to do anything about it. At the same time, Jason has mysteriously disappeared, sending only a terse cryptic message to Riley and Frank.
With some time on her hands and with her frustration with her real-life reaching a breaking point, Riley decides to strike off on her own in-game. Her goal is to investigate the quest related to the strange bow she discovered in the dungeon north of Peccavi. Yet events quickly spiral out of control as she discovers that the bow's former owner has set her along a path of vengeance - with an entire city hanging in the balance.

It's a side story
A side story that to me, really did not add much more than a new interesting class and that is about it.
the story was alright it's more interesting about the character development. so I can't give this a full score since it really feels like a tedious yet rewarding side quests. so a 4/5 is all I will give it.
the performance is as always, brilliant.

A great side story
Retribution is a good book which focuses on a different character other than Jason. Riley is a good character in her own right and this book fleshes her out a bit more.
Some sections in Verwald seem a bit rushed but other than a few minor bits a pieces it gives a good insight into what Riley is as a character and shows her development.
I would recommend this book for those who are a fan of Awaken Online and want another good listen.

An important side story, but..
You get to know Riley better and gives her some much needed personal development, but I can't help being annoyed at times by the main character missing obvious conclusions which makes the story predictable at times. makes me wanna skip ahead 30 sec, but I'm afraid to loose something important. Still good to get more familiar with Riley, and I hope they bring this substance into the third book.

A fabulous edition to the world.
I have hesitated on picking this book up due to it being a "side quest" but I am glad I finally have it a chance. The story further develops the character of Riley and surrounds her with a cast of well defined supporting characters. Brilliant.

Perfect narration for this amazing world.
I adore this series! so well put together by the author and it is read amazingly. I adored the first two books and couldn't stop listening..the wait felt so long for retribution but it was so worth it. Seeing the world from a different viewpoint was great and it has made me love Riley more. I hope this isn't the only side quest. I think the amount of referencing to Jason is spot on. It's there enough to know it is the same game, but it is truly Riley's story. Travis Bagwell is definitely a gem of a writer and I am so happy to have stumbled on this nerdy, funny, awesome series. It is most certainly up there with my favourite books right now.
I could not imagine another voice reading out the ao books, the narration fits perfectly. Even when reading the text I hear it in David Stifel's voice 😂. I hope Travis and David collaborate together more and more as it just works. Mr Stifel is also turning into a bit of a favourite too.
All in all..I'm waiting for the next one not so patiently! Luckily I find the books very repeatable ..So I shall go and listen again and enjoy them just as much. Thank you!

A fantastic expansion of the AO universe
I’ve been waiting a year to hear how Jason explained away the dead bodies! Do we get good clean answers explaining about how the butler (Alfred) did it in the bedroom with the dagger? Not a CLUE (get it?)!
Instead, David Stifel wonderfully narrates this side bar story line that tightened the addiction I know I have for the Awaken Online universe. Darn you BAGWELL!!! Please, please do not turn into a Robert Jorden and pass away before the story is done. Don’t turn into a John Ringo and get bored with a story line and walk away after 3 or 4 instalments! Please Travis, stay happy, stay healthy and keep typing!
Read / listen to the first 2 books. They are worth the credits (audible) or the kindle down load. These are the foundations to the AO world. Mr. Bagwell does not spend time flash backs to bring new readers up to date (thank you). You will be enthralled with the world that Bagwell paints and the characters he skillfully develops.
I do not know Bagwell’s background or if he has people helping him with the social and mental material on bullied teens, but as a father of bullied teen, I can say he dead on the mindset of the bulling problem and how cruel kids can be to each other and themselves. This book is a great case study of a person going from victim to victor. The details of the world and characters are vivid. And he uses those details to pull you deeper into the story.
This story is worth the credit. The story line is binge worthy. Scratch off a day of work or give up a night of sleep. The story is that good.

The same but different.
another excellent entry in the awaken online saga. when I saw that this iteration was a side story I was mostly bummed, but after getting about a quarter through it really started to feel refreshing. Riley goes through some unique experiences. Jason's story and its constant update of stats got a bit taxing in the other two. this book has much less of that while still providing all the nessary infromation. if you liked the other books this one is a guaranteed pick up.

Bagwell brings it full circle.
This was a good sidequest story for a secondary character and world building. Fitting title. I enjoy all of Travis Bagwells books so I expected it to be good. He didn't let me down.
Riley takes on the lead role in this book and shows her develop into her own person furthering her story with Alex, introducing new characters that will likely come into play later, reveals backgrounds of other supporting characters and showing that the world is a lot bigger and wonderous than even high level players can imagine.
The ending brings you back to the main series giving the reader a reminder of the cliffhanger it left off with.
Excellent circle. Great job.

I was skeptical
I tend to hate books outside of the main series. They tend to overdevelop side characters and end up being detrimental... especially when one considers the time wasted on that book instead of it being spent on the next book in the series. All that being said I think this book is very well done. I actually find myself now hoping for more of Riley's story in AO3.
