Expert book

He has combined his research and his personal experience into a one of a kind book. It would take dozens of other books and websites to combine this information. If you want to get to the nitty gritty of autophagy, health, longevity; This is the book.

Great Autophagy Book

Such a book impressed us all. We all have autophagic responses at work in our bodies already, but the realities of modern life often work to slow or inhibit the process of autophagy as we grow older. If we can master the art of triggering enhanced autophagy, though, the potential rewards we can reap are truly staggering.

Technical and practical guide to optimize health

This is a book for nutrition nerds and those curious about the latest research for optimizing health and longevity (health span). Autophagy is the metabolic process of cellular repair and rejuvenation. Throughout our evolutionary history humans have experienced intermittent periods of food scarcity. Our bodies adapted to recycle damaged proteins and cell material during these times in order to provide nutrition for the body. It is natural and intuitive that the body would reuse and recycle nutrients within itself during times of food scarcity, just as our behavior changes to reuse, conserve, and recycle when other materials in our lives are scarce. The body goes into the autophagy cell repair pathway whenever blood insulin hormone and mTOR levels are low for a sustained period (1-3 days depending on an individual’s diet and metabolic state). When food is plentiful our cells readily divide and damaged cell material is not recycled because the body has excess nutrients. The build up of cellular damage over time eventually leads to the diseases of ageing (heart disease, insulin resistance, neurological diseases, cancer, etc). Carefully preparing the body to enter extended fasting periods (typically 3-5 days) allows autophagy to repair and recycle damaged cells and amino acids leading to remarkable health benefits. Doing extended water fasts on a monthly or quarterly basis is optimal.

The book gives a broad summary of the 3 categories of autophagy as well as the metabolic pathway for autophagy vs. the typical insulin/cell growth pathway. It also provides a good summary of several types of intermittent fasting, and in depth overview of extended water fasting, along with practical guidance for fasting safely and provides the optimal conditions to trigger autophagy. Those on ketogenic diets will enter autophagy more quickly and should have a much easier time fasting since their metabolisms are already adapted to burn fat and produce ketone bodies as fuel for cells.

This book left some unanswered questions for me such as the benefits of each of the 3 types of autophagy and how each type is triggered or if all 3 are triggered together. The research also isn’t clear on the rate at which autophagy occurs (if at all) during intermittent fasting. My own experience tells me autophagy occurs at some level in the body during intermittent 16-20 hour fasting but the book stated that the ability to measure the rate of autophagy at the system level has not yet been discovered.

I love the book

I don't usually care for cookbooks on my tablet but this one was on sale so I couldn't pass it up! Glad I got it as there is a lot of good info and many recipes worth a try!

Fairly complicated subject into understandable way

If you want to stay healthy, follow this book.

Excellent source of information on how to keep your body in exceptional shape. I especially like how the author does not explain to touch for supplements but focuses on decent eating habits to get the daily nutrients needed.

I am fasting and losing weight.

Listen to it cover to cover and now plan to go back and relisten slowly taking notes. This book is an excellent combination of science in the first half and the practical how-to in the second. He explains what happens when you don’t fast and how what you ingest during the fasting window affects the results you may get and your health.

The Power of Autophagy explained well.
