About this listen

London, 1921. The Great War has recently ended and tensions in England are high. Now, prominent Cabinet minister Lord Amersham has been shot dead outside his Regent's Park home. The signs point to a professional hit.

Charged with solving one of the most sensitive and high-profile cases Scotland Yard has ever faced, DCI Paul Stark is under pressure to get the job done quickly. Winston Churchill, Secretary of State for the Colonies, is convinced the Bolsheviks are responsible. Stark's contemporaries at Special Branch suspect a connection to Government talks about Irish Home Rule. And others believe the motive could be connected to Lord Amersham’s rather scandalous private life...

When a second crime occurs - another murder committed by an expert marksman at close range - the case takes a terrifying turn and puts Stark right in the middle of an international crisis.

I have most of this writers books on Audible. I do like 1920/30s crime books. Love most of his books. Whilst this book is okay. As others have mentioned there is too much Irish troubles history from the time. also bringing Churchill in as a character is a bit too much of a stretch. Having said all that the bones of the story are good and it has a very exciting end! So give it a go but be prepared for a bit of a history lesson!

Good. But Not Great

An enjoyable book and I look forward to the next in the series. There are several similar detective stories based around the First and Second World Wars, so you have to keep your wits about you as all are fairly similar in structure and plot.

Enjoyable new series

Interesting new series from the same author of the “Museums detectives”, set in London after World War 1.

The story is intriguing enough, and kept me good company while driving.

It took me a little time to get used to the narrator’s voice, but overall I think I did really well.

Looking forward to listening to books 2 in the series.

A new detective from Jim Eldridge

This new series and characters is ok but I did not enjoy it as much as the museum detectives. I feel like the characters are lacking depth and the story takes over too much. The fact that it is based around events in history makes it interesting but also a little bit too contrived.

Not as keen on this as the other series
