Great story highly recommended. It’s a mixture of sci-fi and horror , as a few scientists climb up a mountain that suddenly appeared in the ocean. They find themselves going crazy and time starts behaving strangely.

Story itself was something new, never stopped to be interesting and surprise. Good ending. Thought provoking book. I liked it. Would recommend.

In some reviews or in the book description it might feel that the book will be boring - just a description of people ascending one mountain - but it definitely is not so simple in any way! Don't be averted by that.

Lived up to the challenge it set itself

A pretty gripping opening leads into a familiar plot - the dangerous climb up a mysterious mountain, where people start acting strangely and monsters appear - and the interest generated by various mysteries (what is happening to time? who can be trusted? why is this here?) is squandered in rather half-formed solutions. The narration is desperately plodding - it's mostly in the format of journal entry addressed to a known reader, with the result that it slides constantly into tell-not-show ("and then I realized, Hattie, that he wasn't who I'd thought he'd been at all..."), and there's a wholly predictable tragic subplot that adds nothing; an editor could happily have cut a quarter of the text.
I think it might make a much better film than novel - there are certainly some dramatic action sequences, and the ultimate reveal, such as it is, would be a much more satisfying proportion of a 90 minute film than it is of this longish book.
All of that said, I got to the end - largely by leaving it running in the background while I did other things - and I applaud the author's ambition.
