Publisher's Summary

In the last decade, no industry has been through as much upheaval and turmoil as the music industry. If you're looking for quick fame and instant success, you're in the wrong field. It's now a democratic DIY business, and any guide to success in these new waters must be told by someone who's already survived them. Giving today's aspiring musicians the practical tools they need to build and maintain a lifelong career, How to Make It in the New Music Business becomes not only a brilliantly compiled tutorial on how to accomplish specific tasks - routing a tour, negotiating contracts, getting paid for Spotify and Pandora plays, or even licensing music to commercials, film, and television - but also a manifesto that encourages musicians to pave their own paths. Iin clear, easy-to-follow chapters, Ari Herstand's necessary and definitive handbook promises to redefine what it means to make it in the brave new world of professional music.

    "This is rubbish"

This is a complete waste of time. l purchased this book thinking all my answers have been found in one book. but I have got 2 3rds through and can't stand listening to this big headed, full of himself, who likes the sound of his own voice more than others do. or at least more than l do, and can't bare to listen no more...

"Very good but a bit overwhelming"

It's a great book and it's still good in 2017. It will probably get dated pretty quickly but so does all books of this kind. If you are a band there are tons of good stuff in here. If you are a solo artist (like me) prepared to be overwhelmed with all the things you feel like you need to do after listening to this book (besides writing great songs, making great records). Sometimes you just wish you did not have to be a jack of all trades to succeed, but I guess that's just the way it is. All or nothing!

    "Guide Book for Musicians"

I wish I had this book 5 yrs ago. It's the muse to getting any indie musician or band going. Full of great ideas; great plans; great strategies. How does Ari know? Because he's already done it. Teach from experience. If you're serious about your music, you at least owe it to yourself to listen/read this book. You're guaranteed to find at least ONE good idea. I have pages so far.

"I've never heard anything like this!"

Just finished listening to the whole book and Ari leaves nothing uncovered in this transparent step-by-step guide to making the dream a reality! I am soooooooo encouraged! As soon as I finish writing this review I will be ordering the hard copy so I can go back through it line by line! Worth at least 10,000 times more than it cost! Great job Ari Herstand, my future successes will always be influenced by your teachings in this book! God Bless!

    "An essential read."

if you're a small to medium level musician and looking to make an impact on your career, read this book. There's not another text on the market with an up-to-date literature on both the industry, and from the perspective of a musician.

"Best music business book I have ever read!"

Best music business book I have ever read! Finally a book that gives practical tips and information on today's totally different music industry. I also love that it was written and narrated by a current musician who has actually experienced the things he talks about. I will be recommending this book to my musician friends!

    "Ari has all the answers."

if you have questions about the music business Ari has all the answers. This is the most thorough, down to earth education about music that I've ever had. Ari gives details about websites, managers, agencies, copyrights, writing songs, everything from writer's block to organizing the stage blocking for your performance. It's amazing. If you are an aspiring artist, I highly recommend this book. 10 stars out of 5 for the kid from Wisconsin.

"Maybe the best music business book ever"

I'll be honest, I've only read maybe 4 or 5 books that directly address the music industry, but this is now my #1 go-to recommendation. I am a working musician (I make my living mostly accompanying, with a little teaching and a little performance and merch revenue...I was drawn to the book because I'm interested in how to flip the ratio so I can make more money performing and selling my music and not have to rely on other types of gigs as much), I have a lot of musician friends, and I've told them all that they need to read or listen to this book. I bought a hardcover copy of the book on amazon when I was halfway through without much hesitation because I wanted to be able to go back and high-light different sections and take notes and use it like a textbook.
That being said, I learn aurally better than visually (which is why I love audiobooks) and this book in audio form alone is WELL WORTH IT. Brilliant in every way. The book is well organized, Ari's narration is great and fun to listen to, the book is PACKED with information and it's still very engaging to listen to as though he's just telling you stories.
Lots of books like this try not to get too specific because the industry changes too fast or they're trying to appeal to too broad of a base and I felt like this book did a better job than I could have imagined of giving really detailed specific information that still can apply to virtually everyone interested in the music industry. It's full of fresh new ideas, it will probably answer any question you had about how to be a successful musician/band that it is possible for a book to answer.

To every artist, songwriter, agent, manager, marketer, etc. :
    THIS BOOK IS A MUST

Maybe the best thing I found on audible so far (14th book I've listened to on this platform)
