About this listen

A RUSA Award-winning novel!

The first book in a new culinary cozy series full of sharp humor and delectable dishes—one that might just be killer....

When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. She's tasked with saving her Tita Rosie's failing restaurant, and she has to deal with a group of matchmaking aunties who shower her with love and judgment. But when a notoriously nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex-boyfriend) drops dead moments after a confrontation with Lila, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case.

With the cops treating her like she's the one and only suspect, and the shady landlord looking to finally kick the Macapagal family out and resell the storefront, Lila's left with no choice but to conduct her own investigation. Armed with the nosy auntie network, her barista best bud, and her trusted Dachshund, Longanisa, Lila takes on this tasty, twisted case and soon finds her own neck on the chopping block…

The suspense and mystery were gripping and all may guesses were utterly wrong, good thing I’m not a detective 😜 very little in terms of romance but the many relationships between families and friends were great as the author introduced us to some Asian (mainly Philippino family traditions). It was funny and the many foods Lila mentioned were mouthwatering. I want to try them all. I wish she had added more recipes. Really good young adult read.

fun and light

if you can put those descriptions on a crime story. A bit too long and our main character a bit to self-centred

Cosy and comfortable…

Performance is great. Story is good. Main protagonist is annoying and her actions are ridiculous at times.

Will make you hungry!

This book was super good! The plot was interesting and the narration was good as well (although I have to say I did find her voice annoying at times). It is clearly aimed at a slightly younger audience as the writing style was a bit simple, this may have been accentuated by the narration though. I got very into the storyline and loved the mystery and plot as a whole but the main character isn't super likeable. She's just annoying and makes silly decisions which can be infuriating sometimes. Overall though this book was a good read and I will be reading the rest in the series.
