Herlock Sholmes est une copie transparente du héros de Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, qui en 1906 avait déjà connu un très grand succès en France. Maurice Leblanc était d'ailleurs surnommé "le Conan Doyle français".

Arsène Lupin : Ce Robin des Bois moderne met son intelligence, sa force physique et son sang-froid au secours de "l'innocence persécutée". C'est également un homme élégant et séducteur, très apprécié des femmes. Il sait se montrer d'une ironie inégalable à l'égard des forces de l'ordre et de ses rivaux (principalement l'inspecteur Ganimard et le détective britannique Herlock Sholmès (parodie de Sherlock Holmes)). Son côté enfantin aussi bien qu'une face plus sombre, un caractère à la fois séduisant, torturé et mystérieux, lui ont assuré son succès.
