Summary
Welcome to Arkham County. Population: 749,824. But that number’s dropping all of the time....
Lying northeast of Massachusetts, just south of Hell, Arkham County is somewhere you find yourself, not somewhere you ever mean to go. Once you do find it though, you'd better get used to living there, as you may be there for however long you have left to live.
From within the walls of Arkham’s asylum, reclusive writer Randolph Carter tells the story of orphan Violet Flintock, who arrives in Arkham County in search of her own history only to be instantly greeted by the bloody realities of this small town, whose foundations are built from the lore and mythology of HP Lovecraft.

Astonishingly bad
Incoherent, babbling, disjointed, reliant on entire scenes of groaning noises to denote events, it’s like a really bad podcast put together by the worst of fan fiction writers and teenaged angst ridden poetry.
How the likes of Stanley Tucci got involved in this is quite beyond me.

I am sending it back. 10 minutes and I am done.
How is this irritating? Let me count the ways.
Noise. BIG NOISE, LOUD NOISE, NOISE INTENDED to make up for lame dialogue. From the get-go.
Rod Serling wannabe introduction.
Dialogue that is SO bad, that I stopped cooking dinner and left the room to return the audiobook.
Woman on bus to Arkham (only after a lot of noise). Bus driver proceeds to abuse the woman verbally. Lunatic on bus (makes a lot of noise). Lunatic kills himself (more noise). Woman goes to police station as witness to murder...where the detective proceeds to abuse and insult everyone about everything.
Even in Arkham, a cop who Behaved this way toward the public would be out on his ear in a minute, not to mention the public screaming for his blood.
Time until I couldn't stand it any more? 16 minutes 21 seconds.
There may be a great story buried in here. But between the yelling and screaming and UTTERLY unbelievable dialogue, I will never find out

Out-freaking-standing Lovecraftian audio drama

Out-freaking-standing Lovecraftian audio drama
At the point of this writing, I'm 2 hours from the end of the book, picked it up yesterday morning and did nothing but cackle with glee for the rest of the day. I stopped myself because I was enjoying it so much and wanted to draw out the experience if only a little longer. Childish, I realise, but yeah.
The acting is absolutely spot-on, there are a stellar number of Lovecraftian characters reimagined.
Stanley Tucci's Randalf Carter narration is a **standout** joy. A must for anyone who loves audio horror.

A more critical review on this after a second listen, I still love the hell out of this story and can't wait for the next season to drop.
There is a wonderful focus on friendship, finding oneself, and that you choose your family - all sandwiched between bloodshed and horror. I love how Lovecraft would actually be soiling his shorts if he ever saw what positive inclusive things people were twisting his source material into.
Though that said, there were definitely two scenes/sequences that could have been cut that would have greatly improved the overall quality of the story. (Don't worry I won't spoil anything here)
The first being the opening sequence with the chap who'd been to R'lyeh and seen Dagon, there was just a lot of white space and screaming in the audio that didn't really advance the story and lost me. If I hadn't had the Lovecraft reading that I do, it would have confused the hell out of me.
The second being the vagrant madness section.
Also, Brown Jenkin's voice was almost impossible to understand which was a shame because Keziah's relationship with him is really fun.
Violet and Chloe are a joy to be around, but still, I wish we got more time with Henrietta and Randolph both are super fun re-imaginings.
Again, I can't wait for the next season, and I don't doubt for a second that I'll be revisiting this before too long, it's just plain fun.

Not for Lovecraft fans.
A mess , first audible book I didn't like , just crammed with characters from HP Lovecraft"s classic stories , why ? I would have thought fan service, but a real fan would not enjoy this .

Amateur dramatics
The over the top hammed up performances turned the potentially scary and disturbing story into a pantomime. The director should have known better.

Updated Arkham
Lovecraft seems to be all the rage as of late, as is evident by shows like Lovecraft Country, and the popping up of everyone's favourite tentacle face, Cthulhu, everywhere. That there'd be an audio adaptation of his works seemed inevitable - in fact, they've been around for years already, in the shape of the Dark Adventure Radio Theatre shows produced by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society.
This is something quite different though. While the DART shows set out to adapt the stories of the old gent, this is taking the main characters from several of his stories and throwing them into our time and giving them a whole new adventure to traverse.
Some updates, like the Dunwich line and Keziah Mason, I very much enjoyed, while others, like Randolph Carter and Herbert West, seem a bit more... Odd.
Arkham County swings from being highly entertaining and gripping at points, to disorienting and seeming like a pastiche at others. Overall, I liked the result, but there were some missteps on the way.
This one ended on a cliffhanger, and I wonder when and if we'll get a second installment.

Brace yourself!
Demon gods, living dead, madmen and. Witches, this book has it all. Brought to life with great performances and sound effects. Love it or hate it, the experience is a real trip!

Lovecraft’s greatest hits
This audiodrama, for the most part, is great.
The performances from everyone is outstanding. You fee their tensions, their excitements and gears and on the odd occasion their joys.
The county of Arkham is a wonderful weird and sinister place that draws people to it and can never seem to leave despite how awful it is. There are many players afoot with many games at work which all leads up to a climax that......doesn’t quite pay off.
The problem with this story is that it’s throwing a lot of stuff at you. If you even have a small amount of knowledge of HP’s works you’ll instantly recognise names such as Herbert west and Robert Marsh.
We’ve got reanimator, innsmouth, the dunwich horror amongst others. And these aren’t I inspirations all these stories are in this one. It’s a regular super smash bros of Lovecraft tales that are being interwoven into one tale. That might sound like a wonderful idea but after a while it becomes a bit bloated and as we draw to a close things are resolved surprisingly swiftly and easily.
But don’t take that to mean this wasn’t a good listen because it was. Hearing all these different troubled and horrible people interact with each other along with a narrator who clear loves his work makes for an enjoyable listen.
If you love the cosmic horror made by HP Lovecraft with a modern twist then give this a go just be mindful that your going to be taking a lot in with not everything getting the time (and in some case relevance) that it deserves.

Absolutely brilliant!
I am loving this audio. I listen to audio books while I paint in my studio, and this is such a wonderful dramatisation. It reminds me of Neil Gaiman, The Twilight Zone, etc. I love the sounds and the recording. The actors are fantastic and the storyline is great. Please keep making these. I love them!

Get rid of the background noise!
Why are you drowning out the amazing Stanley Tucci!!?? I really enjoyed the story and the performers. I was completely distracted by the overwhelming background noise. I had a hard time hearing the performers at some points and had to keep backtracking.

Comes across as an obviously British young adult radio play
The dialogue is both heavily British-faking-American (“why do you think I’m stood here? I’m stood right here because...”) and very young. It’s written with a heavy dose of tween naivete and a peppering of formulaic Lovecraft mythos.
The heavy solipsism puts the cosmic horror into a distant nosebleed seat, while the characters ponder how unfair it is to be a reanimated dead person, or the offspring of an elder god. It makes all of the dialogue about the situations cringey, predictable, boring, and unthreatening. A scooby-doo mystery with some college intro-to-writing plot lines. This script literally belongs in a spiral notebook under a teenagers bed. A British teenager.
Stanley Tucci is the only saving grace. His dialogue is actually funny, and allows a good actor to deliver wit that actually is amusing in context. At least it feels that way next to the pallid lines of every other character limply delivered into their own belly buttons.
A mediocre experience overall. Good for doing the dishes, or maybe yard work.

Utterly Boring
Audible recommended this book based on my enjoyment of David Wong's John Dies at the End series. While I did not expect this book to be as creative and Wong's work, I was not ready for this level of the bland dialog and the poor story telling found throughout this story. Even Stanley Tucci, an absolute national treasure, cannot rescue this tale from mundanity. I have an issue with the performance as a whole, but not any particular voice actor does a bad job. It's more that the production should have gone another direction. Listening to this audio is like reading a book with every other line missing, listening to a phone conversation with bad reception, or watching a movie with your TV screen off. I only understand part of the story because I don't know which characters are doing what at which times. There's only so much that can be done to build a scene using sound effects and most of the effects do not convey whatever it is they are supposed to be conveying. This production desperately needs a narrator, if only to announce the character names and the setting in which they find themselves. I made it 4 hours in before I had to call it quits.

Badly needed a production audio engineer
Fx sounds were beyond gratuitous. Muddles up the dialog many times and is just over kill. Tucci is a national treasure but not even a great like him could pull this one outta the lurch. Reminded me of what I imagine we might get; if a love triangle between Neil Gaiman, Anne Rice & Quentin Tarrentino produced a sort of Lovecraftian Bastard spawn who grew up to produce reality TV shows & as a mid-life crisis then decided try their hand at making an “Audible Original”. I stuck through till the end,, can’t say I’m glad I did or didn’t either way. Feeling a bit ambivalent at best on this one.

Wonderful reimagining
This is a wonderful reimagining of Lovecraft’s Mythos, with characters, locations and events from his stories, with some original or modified characters to further modernize it; and some sly Easter eggs thrown in.

If you liked Sandman, this is for you.
This is a gritty, strange, wonderful tale. I thought this was going to somehow be related to Batman’s’ Arkham asylum, boy was I in for a surprise! The only time this story suffers is when the background noise covers the main dialogue.

A brilliant Lovecraftian Crossover
This was a wonderfully integrated audiodrama made up of Lovecrafts most notable characters, all whipped into something original and divoid of the author's unfortunate beliefs regarding people.

awesome
I felt like a few of the characters sounded the same, like voiced by the same person..only to find out that very few if any actor voiced more than one part..it was difficult to follow because of the fact that so much of the cast sounds similar.
but overall great story, well read, I felt like I was there.

fun listen. performances outshine story.
not a bad show. sounds exactly like that. a show. overproduced.
excellent performances. the story had an odd habit of building a story, or even just anticipation of some action. nope. gonna small talk. felt like I was pulling teeth. there was not a corner that revealed any satisfying culmination of the time and voice talents involved. 3.5 overall for me.
