Summary

Meet Liz: all she wants is some peace and quiet so she can read a book with her cat Henry, love of her life, by her side. But trampling all over this dream is a group of wild things also known as Liz's family. Namely:

  • Richard - a man, a husband, no serious rival to Henry.
  • Thomas - their sensitive seven-year-old son, for whom life is a bed of pain already.
  • Evie - five-year-old acrobat, gangster, anarchist, daughter.

And as if her family's demands (Where are the door keys? Are we made of plastic? Do 'ghost poos' really count?) weren't enough, Liz must also contend with the madness of parents, friends, bosses and at least one hovering nemesis. Are We Having Fun Yet? is a year in the life of one woman as she faces all the storms of modern life (babysitters, death, threadworms) on her epic quest for that holy grail: a moment to herself.

Critic reviews

"Utterly, utterly perfect and brilliant - I think it is, simply, a new classic, and the book every woman will be able to trust to make her happy when she picks it up." (Caitlin Moran)

"Utterly wonderful...full of love. Enormously uplifting, funny and witty and wry." (Marian Keyes)

"A glorious, outrageously funny retelling of E.M. Delafield's Diary of a Provincial Lady. At once, a celebration of the joy of family life and a cry of anguish at the utter hell of it. Laugh-out-loud, compulsive reading." (Nina Stibbe)

Made me howl with laughter

This book is very well written and performed - loved the wry humour and clever use of words. It’s a wonderfully sardonic look into their family life.

Heartwarming and heartfelt

A trawl through the everyday life, experiences and observations of the author. The trials and tribulations of the conflicting demands of modern family and work life are warmly and wryly documented. The self narrated audiobook is engaging and life affirming. I really enjoyed this audiobook and didn't want it to end. I will definitely look for more of her writings.

So funny!

This book is brilliant! So relatable and yet so so funny. I cried laughing at some of it and am now mourning the fact that I’ve finished it. The narration by the author is perfect and I hope that she writes another book soon so I can immerse myself in yet another wonderful masterpiece. Thank
You so much for making me laugh!

I almost wet myself

I felt like I was listening to my inner monologue. So blunt, so sarcastic, so truthful, so funny. I’ve recommended it to every mum I know. Easy listening, uplifting, hilarious and honest. Excellent

A very amusing and realistic take on adult life and a parent,

This story is great and is so well narrated. I found myself laughing aloud and Goodness! Can I empathise with this tale too! No doubt, so will millions of others who listen or read this wonderfully entertaining story. I really and truly enjoyed this but as previously mentioned, the narrators voice was perfect. Thank you for brightening up my day. 😊

Loved it.

I really enjoyed this. It took me back to being a young mother with its mixture of never having nearly enough time and trying to make the most of each moment.
