Apples are at the core of the family business run by Winona Mae Montgomery and her Granny Smythe. But this year's crop is unseasonably ripe with murder....

One rotten apple

Blossom Valley, West Virginia, is home to Smythe Orchards, Winnie and her Granny's beloved 25-acre farm and family business. But any way you slice it, it's struggling. That's why they're trying to drum up business with the "First Annual Christmas at the Orchard", a good old-fashioned holiday festival with enough delicious draw to satisfy apple-picking locals and cider-loving tourists alike - until the whole endeavor takes a sour turn when the body of Nadine Cooper, Granny's long-time, grudge-holding nemesis, is found lodged in the apple press. Now, with Granny the number one suspect, Winnie is hard-pressed to prove her innocence before the real killer delivers another murder....

I love this author's mysteries (under her various names) and generally prefer them on audible as I don't do such a good American accent in my head! But this actor spoke sooooo s-l-o-o-o-w-l-y it was excruciating. As a tip, listen to it on 1.25x speed for a more normal sounding performance. You can even get away with 1.50x, but it starts sounding a bit high putched in a chipmunk sort of a way any faster than that!

Performance was way too slow

Fabulous storyline with a mixture of family, romance and murder. Narration is excellent. I highly recommend this book and already on to book two.

Highly enjoyable book

The basic set up of: a family farm; a young woman who finds herself in danger, but ignores instructions not to investigate; a best friend; a new, handsome sheriff in town; a murder mystery; supportive neighbours; and cats, is similar to another series of books. The actual plot is different. The story is ok, but overlong with too much padding. The ending is good; obviously there will a sequel. The narrator was articulate and voiced the various characters very well. It helped me through the housework; overall, I enjoyed it.

Reminiscent of another series of books.
