Summary

Winner of the 2020 Nautilus Award in Psychology

Anxiety is unavoidable: Suffering is optional.

“Anxiety Rx is unlike any book on anxiety and a must-read for anyone who suffers with chronic worry.” (Nicole LePera, PhD)

The Holistic Psychologist

On February 8, 2013, I was a highly anxious and burned-out 52-year-old physician. That night, as I left my clinic in my usual chronic state of anxiety, I wondered if life was worth living. But I had to be onstage as a stand-up comedian an hour later, so killing myself would have to wait. However, I never got to the comedy club. I suffered an injury that night that would end my medical career.

I’ve dealt with anxiety since I was a teenager. My father was schizophrenic and bipolar, and the chaos and pain of his illness created tremendous alarm in my system. My mother did her best to love and take care of my brother and me, but she had her own issue with chronic anxiety. I often say my mother was neurotic and my father was psychotic, so my psyche didn’t stand much of a chance!

I wrote this book to make my father’s eventual suicide and the suffering of my family mean something: to help others like me who experienced chronic worry to understand and fix the pain that was sucking the life out of their lives. I have degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience, and developmental psychology, but much of what I’ll share with you came out of my experiences in very unscientific places.

This book is unique in its blend of hard neuroscience and soft spirit. For over 30 years, I searched for relief from anxiety and saw over 50 practitioners ranging from Indian shamanic energy healers to highly accomplished psychiatrists. (I was lucky I was a doctor so I could afford to be a patient.) Have you, too, gone to extraordinary lengths to resolve your chronic compulsion to worry and are still suffering? Listen on. What makes this book different is its relentless focus on calming anxiety at its true source, which I will share with you in detail. That source is in a place most doctors and psychologists fail to explore, and that oversight is why the positive effects of most anxiety therapies tend to wear off over time.

Although I’ll talk about my patient’s experiences with anxiety as well as my own, everything within these chapters has been vetted, explored, and applied to my own life. The ideas and practices are unique, novel, and effective. This is my life’s work and the ultimate book of high-impact solutions for escaping the trap of chronic worry. I truly do not want you to suffer as I have!

I’ve gone from being a hapless victim of my anxiety, never knowing when it would end, to having a path that helps me every single time anxiety comes up. People with anxiety are confused because they don't know what is happening to them. In this book, I'll show you exactly what is going on in your mind and your body and exactly what you can do about it. What is in this book has changed my life very much for the better, and I know it will do the same for you.

Transformative. Compassionate. Life changing!

I've read so many amazing books on trauma recovery / anxiety and depression and ADHD/autism spectrum. All amazing books but I was always left with some crucial unanswered questions. What is anxiety? How do I move through my anxiety? How do I learn to truly understand it and live with it? I found the answers I was searching for in this book and answers to questions I didn't even know I needed to ask! I'm so deeply grateful to you Russell Kennedy. So thank you.

Best book on anxiety ever written

If you have tried everything to help your anxiety, get this. You will not be let down. This is the one book I have read that has actually helped. My anxiety has at least been cut in half since listening to this book. Russell know his stuff, he is a doctor and had anxiety for decades. This is like nothing you have ever come across before on anxiety. He is also very funny which really helps. But it now!!!

An inspirational book

I have read this book twice now and I have only just commenced my journey incorporating the ABC practice into my daily life. All I can say is I am now more aware when my negative thoughts appear, but focusing on my breath and being more compassionate with myself is making a difference to my victim mentality. I would recommend listening to this book if you are experiencing feelings of anxiety because it does work if you work it.

Wow! Someone who gets anxiety!

When I saw this book was over 12 hours, I wondered if it would be dry. In fact it was the opposite. What was really useful was to hear someone say what I’d been saying, that you can’t think your way out of anxiety. Thank Russell. There are so many tools in here.

truly found THE BOOK about anxiety

kind, thought provoking, real.thanks for this wonder of a book.I found for once relatable content from beginning to the end. have already started realising when I m going into alarm, rather than being swallowed by it.it s a long journey, but Dr Russell wonderfully gives tools to work on the alarm and start a compassionate journey of healing towards oneself.

thanks again

Best resource I've found for my anxiety!

I wept at the end of this audiobook- the very end. Realizing my anxiety is the concern of my younger self asking if everything is gonna be alright is a treasured gift for which I am truly grateful and will take with me. I identified with much of the pain and struggles described and also laughed out loud during many funny moments. This book is a welcome departure from the trove of others I've read that seem to be full of anecdotes of healing or recovery but never quite zero in on the "how" I could take and apply in my own life. This one does. For me, the takeaway is a complete paradigm shift: my anxiety is not something to get rid of, just the concern of my younger self(ves) to be attended to. Not exactly the "cute" I was hoping for when I started out but may end up being more therapeutic and enriching just the same. Whatever your interest in this topic, my heart goes out to you and I wish you well. And from my younger self to yours, you're gonna be ok.

Incredibly long winded and repetitive

I appreciate the premise, but it’s insanely long winded. I’ll save you 15 hours…Your anxious thoughts don’t cause you pain. The “alarm” stored in your body, which is essentially unresolved trauma from your life and gets activated by worried anxious thoughts is what causes pain. To solve it, learn to recognize when it’s happening, accept those thoughts are irrational, practice grounding techniques (google it), breath work and yoga. Saved you 15 hours of incredibly repetitive explanations and analogies.

Very Repetitive

Book often repeats making the reader feel dumb. Also talks a lot of childhood trauma which didn’t apply to me. Not at all helpful.

Addressed issues I didn’t even realize I had

This book approached anxiety from a new perspective for me. Not one of how to get rid of it. Because if you’ve had anxiety you know getting rid of it isn’t an option. But learning to understand it and use it for the better is an option and that’s what this book focuses on. Loved it

Finally, clear instruction to help quiet anxiety!

I feel like Russel is a friend now! I can see my own experiences mirrored in his life long journey to be at peace. I have been trying for many years to calm my anxiety with little success. Implementing the "ABC's" is the first thing that has really helped. Breath work without the ABC's can only do so much. Thank you Russell for sharing and giving me the tools needed to help myself.

Exhausting to listen to

Talks way too fast, monotone voice, talks only about his experiences. Actually gave me more anxiety.
