Summary

In the wake of tragic events in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Donald Trump's initial refusal to denounce the white nationalists behind it all, the "antifa" opposition movement is suddenly appearing everywhere. But what is it, precisely? And where did it come from?

As long as there has been fascism, there has been anti-fascism - also known as "antifa." Born out of resistance to Mussolini and Hitler in Europe during the 1920s and '30s, the antifa movement has suddenly burst into the headlines amid opposition to the Trump administration and the alt-right. They could be seen in news reports, often clad all in black with balaclavas covering their faces, demonstrating at the presidential inauguration, and on California college campuses protesting far-right speakers, and most recently, on the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, protecting, among others, a group of ministers including Cornel West from neo-Nazi violence. (West would later tell reporters, "The anti-fascists saved our lives.")

Simply, antifa aims to deny fascists the opportunity to promote their oppressive politics, and to protect tolerant communities from acts of violence promulgated by fascists. Critics say shutting down political adversaries is anti-democratic; antifa adherents argue that the horrors of fascism must never be allowed the slightest chance to triumph again.

In a smart and gripping investigation, historian and former Occupy Wall Street organizer Mark Bray provides a detailed survey of the full history of anti-fascism from its origins to the present day - the first transnational history of postwar anti-fascism in English. Based on interviews with anti-fascists from around the world, Antifa details the tactics of the movement and the philosophy behind it, offering insight into the growing but little-understood resistance fighting back against fascism in all its guises.

An Anti Racist Handbook With Appalling Accents

How on earth did the publisher think that a great book, detailing the struggle against fascism and racism, could be read by someone with crass hammy and stereotyping accents? An appalling choice.

Great writing but basic pronunciation mistakes

Antifa = "anti fa(cism)", not "an tifa(cism)". It's basic common sense. Get that wrong & you sound like you don't know your stuff.
Update: huge, huge load of history of the struggle against fascism. Very good. Cursory bit at the end about actually doing it. Not a handbook as such, but nonetheless a useful read.

Invaluable insight in to what Antifa is.

Excellent insight.

The goals of anti fascism are laudable and impossible to disagree with when one considers the impact of prejudice mixed with authoritarianism in history.

What’s interesting, is the line where ‘anti fascism’, blended with its own political ideology, and wider assertions as to what people should think about hobby topics, becomes asserted and backed by force, be it soft or hard, by anonymous, unaccountable, undemocratic, ideologues.

This is well evidenced in the narrative here, highlighting how Antifa is no less a danger to civil society than the alt right is, as well as other straw men they attack, and instead of engaging in transparent public dialogue.

Read in hand with The Anatomy of Fascism by Robert Paxton.

Epic

Really loved this book and I'd recommend it to all antifascists. Bit short on time. Filling words out. Nice.

Interesting introduction to Antifa thought.

Very interesting. Read well. Good analysis of current and historical context of the movement. Recommended for those who are sympathetic to the movement and to those who need to understand who Antifa as opposed to negative main stream media treatment.

Ruined by fake accents

What on earth gives with doing a fake accent whenever you're quoting someone whose first language isn't US English? Worst gimmick I've heard in a long time.

interesting history

quite a detailed and interesting historical look at militant anti fascism in Europe and USA. I would've liked more academic interest, Bray touched on Aime Cesaire and Du Bois but I think a greater examination action of their work and inclusion of minds like Franz Fanon and Walter Benjamin and expanding the history of where fascism came from in relation to European colonialism would have been a nice historical touch.

I also found the accents the narrator uses to be a bit comical at times. gor blimey, guv nor luv a duck.
