Summary

"I left her when she was eight. Just a child. Too young to be alone. I killed myself because I could never atone for the things he made me do. There is something wrong with my family, you see. A fear runs through us, through our blood. A fear that circles above us, shredding the sky and clawing at our hearts, and now, from a deathless realm, I am forced to watch as my lonely daughter is tortured by the life I gave her to endure. No father should see the things I've seen, but then no father should do the things I did. Forgive me, Angela."

Angela, a bleak and unflinching gothic horror in which we meet a lonely, middle-aged woman who must live with the legacy of her family's dark secret, the madness that grows in the absence of love, and a closet full of delicate skeletons.

A hauntingly dark tale.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook to a friend because I think that everyone can appreciate the emotions and characters conveyed in this book to some extent, which adds greatly to the involvement of the listener. The tension mounts perfectly towards a shocking end.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Angela was my favourite character, although she has an undeniably extreme dark side, the story which unfolds cleverly elicits sympathy as well as revulsion.

What about Rob Goll’s performance did you like?

Rob Goll's soothing narration lent itself eerily to the sinister atmosphere and disturbing events, bringing the characters to life in an understated manner perfectly suited to the tone of the story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Although the reasons behind Angela's dark side are terribly disturbing, the moment that particularly moved me was at the Christmas party, when Angela is mocked for her appearance and overhears. She has no partner and is there alone, and really unwanted, as she is mostly through all of her life.

Any additional comments?

The story gets under the skin evoking conflicting feelings. Brilliantly observed and thoroughly recommended.

Compulsory

What did you like most about Angela?

Angela takes your soul and turns you into one of her birds. She will show you what life is through her eyes. The eyes of a desperately lonely and disturbed woman.

What other book might you compare Angela to, and why?

A distant reminiscent of Stephen King's Carrie perhaps, but this book is UNIQUE.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

"No Angel" The whole chapter.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Angela and The Wings

Any additional comments?

Rob Goll is an actor, a voice artist and he has the imagination to make the written word come alive. He has the right combination of skill and talent.
He delivers a haunting, heartfelt performance as he shares this edge-of-your seat dark novella, engaging your imagination and take you on a journey by narrating and bringing to life this spine tingling story. His range, versatility and effects are wonderful to listen to because Goll's voice is the one I already heard in my head when I read the book. It has a world-weary quality that makes words successfully melded into my head by the beautiful craftsmanship of his narration. And, that is what I look for in an audiobook.

Exceptional

This is one of the most well written books I have come accross lately- some of the lines are pure poetry- really imaginative descriptions. Any book involving demons etc could easily be cheesy or overdone, but this fantastically offers a demonic hit without using the same old tropes. Stunning writing, and if your looking for something truly scary and disturbing then this is most definitely it- don't listen at night!

Angela…not quite so angelic!

If you could sum up Angela in three words, what would they be?

Dark, descriptive and captivating.

What did you like best about this story?

The fact that the heroine is not your usual pretty, likable girl…she’s the exact opposite: an overweight middle-aged woman with loads of issues!!… someone you would probably try to avoid in real life. I think that’s what makes it a good novel, its proximity to reality, its brutality in unmasking the ugly face of human nature.

What does Rob Goll bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A sense of urgency and anticipation that accentuates the darkness that’s felt throughout the book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Throughout the book I was particularly fascinated by the birds, their prime role in the story…their eyes penetrate deep into your soul whilst you feel their despair and helplessness.

Great writing, but...

There is no doubt that Adam Booth can write. He descriptions are vivid and engaging. However, this story was not for me. It started well, but became more and more bizarre. The whole birds thing....
