"I believed that if you sincerely and honestly acted for the good, goodness would be the consequence. How little I knew…"
What the author calls "unintended consequences" permeates this searing novel of the heroic and tragic epoch of American history known as the Civil Rights Movement. Julius Lester, a much acclaimed novelist and voracious scholar now in his70s, paints a moving portrait of John Calvin Marshall, a fictionalized version of the great Martin Luther King, Jr.; Marshall’s widow; and his white lover.
As performed by DeMario Clarke in a gentle, grave, confessional tone, Lester takes the listener beyond the strict limits of history and into the interior stirrings of his characters, at once the perpetrators and victims of that ghost-like force known as time.
