Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A deeply powerful memoir about bipolar illness that has both transformed and saved lives—with a new preface by the author.

Dr. Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive (bipolar) illness; she has also experienced it firsthand. For even while she was pursuing her career in academic medicine, Jamison found herself succumbing to the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic depressions that afflicted many of her patients, as her disorder launched her into ruinous spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempted suicide.

Here Jamison examines bipolar illness from the dual perspectives of the healer and the healed, revealing both its terrors and the cruel allure that at times prompted her to resist taking medication.

Critic reviews

“An invaluable memoir of manic depression, at once medically knowledgeable, deeply human and beautifully written ... at times poetic, at times straightforward, always unashamedly honest.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Stands alone in the literature of manic-depression for its bravery, brilliance and beauty.”—Oliver Sacks

“Jamison’s [strength] is in the gutsy way she has made her disease her life’s work and in her brilliant ability to convey its joys and its anguish.... Extraordinary.” —Washington Post Book World

Well written and well read

The fact that the author was the narrator, made it easy more realistic and personal experience.
The book certainly helps to understand what a life is for a manic depressive person. Although it was very intense and extreme case of one of many cases, one should understand that not everyone experiences the same level and intensity.
This might be scary for some and lead them to believe that they might go through the same but at the end, there is hope.
Well done to the author to open up their experience which is not always available to everyone and thank you for sharing

Extraordinary

This is one of the most moving, challenging and thought provoking books I’ve read in many a year. It is a story so well told because it has been lived, often painfully but always fully. It makes me think of the words of Mary Oliver
“I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world”

Fabulous story.

Fabulous story. Gives great personal insight into how mood disorder are actually 'illnesses' to be grappeled with.

Extraordinary beyond any time

Perfectly captivates the beauty of suffering and the endless pain of feeling more than a human can ever handle on its own.
No matter what year it was written it still captures every single aspect of this mental illness and its struggles and what a true battle it is for all of us.
I'm eternally greatful for her ability to put it into words, into sentences that make sense about the madness that I was condemned to live in.
Made me feel less alone for that moment.

Thank You, Kay R. J.

Raw and real

I obviously finished it, but am going to go back and listen to it again now. So much information and raw emotion on an incredibly sensitive topic. Thank you for making the way I feel less 'off the scale'.

A wonderful account

As somebody who lives with bipolar I can say that this book has helped me immensely. Kay has a wonderful ability to articulate her experiences, thoughts and feelings, all of which resonate with my own. I only wish I could get all of my family, friends and colleagues to listen / read this book so as to better understand my illness.

I found the narration to be calming and very listenable.

Highly recommended.

Beautiful and raw

I easily binged this book and could really feel the author's experience. A friend of mine was diagnosed with bipolar disorder this year and I also have a patient currently considering that she might have it, so wanted to learn more so I could better support them. Such a beautiful and raw book and I feel better educated about the disorder and how it feels. Thank you for writing this, Kay. I can only imagine what it was like to do so and I know my friend felt very seen by your words and experience.
