About this listen

Welcome to Oldminster, a quaint little town where there’s always a mystery to be solved.

Frank Renfield, Baron of Renfield Hall, will stop at nothing to save himself from ruin. Even if that means marrying his daughter off to a rich American. Unfortunately for him, she is already in love with a penniless nobody named Alan Lavender—to the glee of Alan’s greedy uncle Guy. He’s been nosing into the Renfields’ murky past, and he says he’s uncovered a secret. Something so shocking it casts a shadow over Frank’s entire legacy.

Tensions run high at the hall, until Guy Lavender turns up dead. A convenient coincidence for Frank? Detectives French and Edwards are on the case. But in a town full of secrets, the truth can be hard to find. And Guy’s won’t be the only body to fall before their work is done … Who will be next to die under the Renfields’ roof?

The storyline was ok, full of stereotypes and cliches but pleasant enough however it was the narration which was terrible. I sounded like it was being read by the satnav rather than the Audible app.

I managed to get to the end by increasing the playback speed which made it a little more natural but I certainly won’t be listening to anything else by this narrator.

Automated Narration?

The plot was good. the narrator completely destroyed it.
I very nearly gave up after the second chapter, but the story kept me going.
The narrator had a monotonous voice, it was difficult to differentiate between the characters; and he certainly didn't manage to give them any personality.

Terrible narrator

Story may not be as slow as the narrator made it feel. Tried to stick with it but couldn’t.

Awful narration

I found the narration so stilted it really grated - like listening to an automated voice. I see the rest of the author's books are also narrated by the same person so I'll be avoiding them

An Invitation to Murder - the story seemed to be okay but I stopped listening a third of the way through as ....

Narrator didn’t work for me. Found voices slow and unrealistic. Characters seemed a bit two dimensional and not very relatable to. Plot was generally okay but I wouldn’t look for this author or narrator again

Didn’t like the characters
