Summary

Mr. Darcy is determined to find a wife he can love and respect. He is fascinated by the lively Miss Elizabeth Bennet, but is determined to forget her due to her low connections. Until an act of jealously puts her life at risk. Faced with the bleak reality of living without her forever, Mr. Darcy must examine what he really wants. With the assistance of Colonel Fitzwilliam, his sister, and Elizabeth's father, Mr. Darcy works to save Elizabeth's life. If he is lucky, he will then be able to win her heart.

Short and sweet

This is a low angst variation and, while not great literature, it's an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. Darcy realises his love for Elizabeth is more important than his pride when she has a bad fall as she and Jane are leaving Netherfield. Caroline behaves very badly in a moment of anger, but she recognises her mistake and attains a reasonably happy ending. Wickham, on the other hand, remains vicious and spiteful and his final defeat comes at the hands of someone unexpected...

My initial thoughts on the narration were that it was going to ruin the story, but it either improved or I grew accustomed to it. I'd think twice before getting anything else narrated by AS, but it wouldn't stop me with something I really wanted!

Delightful "What If" Novella

What if Lizzy was injured during her stay at Netherfield with Jane, and she was forced to stay in Darcy's presence longer? This novella explores that option with great results. As Jane and Lizzy enter the carriage to return to Longbourn, Ms. Bingley is overcome with frustration at being ignored by Darcy and strikes out with her parasol, hitting the horse. Lizzy falls and is injured badly. In the moment of distress, Darcy realizes the depth of his feelings for her, but he knows she doesn't care for him in return. While fighting to protect her and save her life, he needs to change her heart as well.

This variation kept the characters true to canon, but enhanced some of their personality traits just a bit. It made some characters like Georgiana and Mary even more likable, and Mr. Collins even more odious. I actually enjoyed Caroline Bingley in such a small dose, and loved Mr. Bennett in such a large one. I thought the language and conversations were well done. The book doesn't rehash any of the events of the original story like the Meryton Assembly, just refers to them, so we're not slowed down by well known details.

The narrator was great, she had the perfect accent for the story. I thought she performed the speaking voices well. It was a few hours spent in good company visiting old and well-loved friends!

Would you listen to An Inconvenient Courtship again? Why?

Yes

Which character – as performed by Amy Soakes – was your favorite?

A enjoyed Amy Soake's performance. My favorite were Dr. Taylor and Miss Bingley. She expressed their characters through their way of speaking very well.

Any additional comments?

A well written, cute short story about a faster courtship between D&E. I liked their interactions, and an addition of colonel Fitzwilliam, Georgiana and doctor Taylor. Everybody got their HEA, and I was proud of Mrs. Bennet's motherly feelings at the end. I just hope the story was a bit longer, and fleshed out a little more.

Enjoyable story, narration needed work.

I truly enjoyed the what-if story line. The characters stayed fairly true to Austen's intent.
The best part was how Mr. Bennett, Mary and Miss Bingley grew from their experiences.
Unfortunately, the choice of narrator left something to be desired. It was difficult to tell the difference between characters at times, especially the young ladies. Mr Bennett's voice was very annoying.
