Summary

Kieran's love life didn't get off to a good start. He threw up after his first kiss; he was beaten up by the first girl to have a crush on him; and after a mix-up with his first love letter, he could only sit back and watch as the entire school mistook him for a brutal murderer. By the time the hormones kicked in, Kieran had all but given up on love, but the worst was yet to come.

Relying on advice from friends who are just as dumb and just as clueless, Kieran weaves a stuttering, stumbling path through the world of adult dating. He lacks decorum, charisma, confidence - everything he needs to succeed. Despite that, there is one girl who changes him, one girl who eases his nerves and gives him hope. She is everything he had hoped for: beautiful, generous, funny - and she didn't turn tail and run when she first saw him. But then, she disappears. Will Kieran find her again? And if he does, can his luck hold long enough to make a relationship with her last? What are the chances that all the mishaps and misadventures that go before, between, and after will put him off dating for good?

An Idiot in Love chronicles a series of unfortunate sexual encounters and relationships that every listener can appreciate and sympathize with.

Critic reviews

"Raw, raunchy, laugh-out-loud funny, and surprisingly affecting, An Idiot in Love is a deeply relatable page-turner. The honesty, candor, and humor of David Jester's prose is something to be admired and enjoyed. I loved this book!" (Davy Rothbart, author of My Heart Is an Idiot and creator of FOUND magazine)

Brilliant insight into teenage boy's brains!

This book is absolutely brilliant, what an interesting insight into teenage boy's brains!
In places it makes your toes curl with embarrassment for the poor lad due to some of his disastrous adventures into the world of girls, sex and relationships.
I listened to a lot of the book during the night and had to stop myself from laughing out loud for fear of waking my husband.
Having bought up 2 boys, who are now adults, I could totally relate to the characters.
Loved every minute.

Entertaining Story

I enjoyed this book, following Kieran’s journey from the age of 9, through his teenage years, and into adulthood, where he finally grows up and stops being an idiot! There are some funny moments, some embarrassingly cringeworthy moments, and some dreadful choices, but overall the book is entertaining. To be read with a sense of humour.

Offensive and outdated

I like a coming of age story usually and at the beginning of this tale enjoyed the humourous comments on first crushes. But by the time it got to the teenage years I felt more and more uncomfortable and (I don’t want to be accused of sense of humour failure here) but had to stop listening as it was downright offensive and in this day and age really not ok. The point at which the 13 year old central character gets fixated on a classmates breasts (‘tits’) and his friend says ‘these are the golden years, you see all these ugly b****s soon they’ll all have tits (or something along those lines) in a sea of likewise totally age inappropriate comments I had to stop listening. The awful truth about what happens in secondary schools in terms of sexual abuse of young girls by classmates which has recently had so much publicity is too fresh in my mind. There are ways of expressing teen boy fixations without the sort of graphic exploitative objectification which the author excels at. I like funny, and I’m not a prude, but this is just not ok!
