Summary

Maud is an irascible 88-year-old Swedish woman with no family, no friends, and...no qualms about a little murder. This funny, irreverent story collection by Helene Tursten, author of the Irene Huss Investigation series, features two-never-before translated stories that will keep you laughing all the way to the retirement home.

Ever since her darling father's untimely death when she was only 18, Maud has lived in the family's spacious apartment in downtown Gothenburg rent-free, thanks to a minor clause in a hastily negotiated contract. That was how Maud learned that good things can come from tragedy. Now in her late 80s, Maud contents herself with traveling the world and surfing the net from the comfort of her father's ancient armchair. It's a solitary existence, and she likes it that way.

Over the course of her adventures - or misadventures - this little, bold lady will handle a crisis with a local celebrity who has her eyes on Maud's apartment, foil the engagement of her long-ago lover, and dispose of some pesky neighbors. But when the local authorities are called to investigate a dead body found in Maud's apartment, will Maud finally become a suspect?

Entertaining

Well read. A short audiobook . Very good character in Maud , the innocent looking elderly lady who you would not want as a neighbour. Like a misanthropic Miss Marple using her cleverness for wrong-doing. Very entertaining.

Amusing

This listen was very amusing. It's a glimpse inside the life of a woman from a formerly well-to-do family who stays in her families' home with all their glorious possessions from years past, though everyone would love for her to leave the rent controlled (actually free...) flat. It seems as if everyone who encounters Maud underestimates her, because she is capable of a lot at 89 years old, even murder.

Lovable Anti-hero

The avenging, revengeful octogenarian has been created to confirm that you should never make assumptions about people based on physical appearances, especially age. The people who do her wrong deserve what they get from her and at her age she has regrets or overwrought angst to keep her at home brooding. She is the new 0089 licensed to kill. Very well dramatically read with age, too.

Kept my interest, nice length

I enjoyed the story and length very much. The reader is engaging. Funny in a macabre kind of way. She was a spunky old lady for sure. I liked how she played to people's stereotypes to her advantage.

Hilarious

Power to wise women! This lady does not tolerate fools long or well. This is a marvelous book! Very clever murders of very nasty people. Believe me you will treat women with walkers with more respect.

Don’t underestimate the elderly

Several fun tales woven around a mysterious private old woman. Maud loves treating herself to good food, trips, and the spa. And she doesn’t intimidate easily.

Disappointed

Not up to the standard I've come to expect from Helene Tursten. I was left with an unsettling feeling of lack of completeness.

Narrator was great despite the content of the book

I thought this book would be like Fredrick Backmans book, "A Man Called Ove." Or even The Little Old Lady series from Catharina Ingleman-Sundberg. No such luck.

First chapter in and there is crude language, mention of tampons and dildos. Also the token gay guy is put in to round it all out. I listened to the first chapter and didn't care to hear more. Content was horrible. Did not grab the reader. And it seems the author wants the shock value over real content.

The narrator was excellent. Her voice was clear and easy to listen to. Great dictation. I would love to hear her read other books.

Terrible obscenity —took away from story

Would not recommend it at any age reader & I read a lot ! Should have a caution -
