Summary

The ideal lady wears lace, speaks quietly, and never - under any circumstances - fixes an automobile. But Gwyn Ruthers has never cared two snaps about being the ideal lady. With the war to end all wars exploding across the English Channel, she leaves behind her restrictive life as a chauffer's daughter to serve in an all-female ambulance unit in France. She's not about to let her social status or gender prevent her from serving her country. Not even a handsome captain can distract her from her mission. Most of the time.

Captain William Crawford wouldn't wish the ravages of war on any man, much less the captivating woman who insists on driving into battle instead of staying safely at home. He can't deny that the troops need more medical help but not when it puts innocent women in danger. How can he lead his men against the Jerries while worrying about Gwyn's safety?

Bound together by circumstances, Gwyn and William can't stop the love growing between them. Can their relationship survive, or will it become another casualty of war?

the usual author did very little with history

Just the unique model of strong women falls in love with old fashion military guy. Had potential but seems to taken the easy way out of writing with exponding on history.

I really enjoyed it

I thought the narrator was good, not sure why other reviewers didn’t like her. Good story. Religious references were minimal. Worth listening to, I had trouble pausing it, just wanted to listen straight through.

Narration ruined it...

The narrator was monotone and the entire book was like a giant run on sentence. The story itself seemed good and had my interest so I had to finish it. But it’s not a leisure listen as it takes a lot of focus to understand as the narrator doesn’t have any inflection. The characters can get confusing and muddled if you’re not paying attention. Didn’t think the narrator could get anymore robotic until she voiced Cecilia...

Great story

A light romance with thoughtful insight into elements of WWI, the changing plight of British gentry and the emerging push for greater gender equality. Unfortunately the narration wasn’t great hence the 4 star rating.

The narrator wasn’t a good reader

She had awkward and incorrect pausing - sometime in the middle of a sentence for no conceivable reason. She also didn’t place the correct emphasis on words so the meaning of the sentence or paragraph was almost entirely lost. I could read better than this by 8th grade.

lovely story. bad narrator

i am sorry to join in with rhe narrator bashing with everyone's else, but she wasn't good. To be honest though, she wasn't as bad as everyone made her to be. she didn't make for the most pleasant listening, but I got used to her by chapter 6 more or less.

on to the story, as I said, it was lovely. nothing groundbreaking and maybe one could say a bit predictable but honestly I just came in for a nice love story during the war and that's what i got. so it's a win for me.

someone complained about the religious references, and while it is true that the characters are Christian... there isn't an over abundance of it. they are in the middle of a war, sometimes they pray to god in moments of need. nothing to write home about.

It was good but...

I loved the story line and this book made me want to look for more like it but I could do without the Christian drivel thrown in, It's unnecessary and takes away from an otherwise 5 star book.

Awful narration

A good enough story, but the narration is just appalling. Some really should vet narrators because in this case, pronunciation is laughable and some of it is simply embarrassing.
