Summary

Following Blood and Iron and The Center Cannot Hold, The Victorious Opposition triumphantly concludes Harry Turtledove's American Empire trilogy - a masterful saga of alternate history. War is brewing yet again as the U.S.A. struggles to occupy Canada, and the C.S.A. begins forcing blacks into concentration camps.

Quit repeating yourself Harry.

Interesting alt-history but if I have to hear about how "bully" became "swell" one more time. Or the fat General"s jiggling jowls. Or the mouth watering aroma of meals. Or tired women being pregnant. Or the introduction of the forward pass. There are literally dozens of other examples. No observation is too mundane not to beat into the ground. Turtledove's stuttering style makes what could have been a great series painful to get through. At least a third of the subplots are unnecessary. I'll go on to the next book but Harry is taking a lot of the fun out of it.

So it begins.

What did you love best about American Empire?

The narration and the overall storyline.

What did you like best about this story?

The storyline itself, and the characters as well.

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have. Just as good as his other ones.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Get ready for a world war.

Any additional comments?

None.

Does not finish the story

What disappointed you about American Empire?

This book does not finish the story and the next series of books is not available on audio. I listened to hundreds of hours of a story that I will not hear the end of. Do not buy this book nor any of the other books in the alternative civil war series if you like knowing how the story ends.

Don't buy this if its your first Turtledove

This was my first Turtledove and I chose it because it was described as a conclusion of the series but its just the end of the prequel. Still, they could have added a synopsis to explain some of the terribly boring sub plots like Lucien in Quebec that had no payoff and didn't add anything to the main storyline, which was pretty good.

What a surprise after 24 hrs of listening

What disappointed you about American Empire?

The story does not have an ending.

What could Harry Turtledove have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not string me along for 24 hours.

What didn’t you like about George Guidall’s performance?

His performance was OK.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

None what so ever.

Any additional comments?

It was like listening to a story about Hitler up to the invasion of Poland - only the names and places were different.
