Story
The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the Native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon came ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There went the good old days, when humans got killed only by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Udo's biggest problem isn't being a digger (that's low class), or staying drunk (that's damn expensive), or avoiding the Dwergaz (they're monsters), or even pissing off the supposed Gods. It's that his reality...well, it isn't what he thought. And now, he can't even afford to drink because his so-called friend Nicz is cutting into his business, digging up tin, iron, and copper. So Udo forms a new plan: clay. After all, clay jars are used to store everything: meat, herbs, and, his personal favorite, ale.

Sorry, but it's nothing new.
I was excited to listen to this book based on the reviews left by other Audible members, but I have to say, I don't agree with them. There's nothing new here at all and certainly nothing that makes me want to pick up the next instalment. The performance by the exceptionally talented R. C. Bray, was brilliant, but surely he knew that most of what he was reading had already been written. Check out Craig Alanson's Expeditionary Force saga - also read by Mr Bray. Earth invasions, worm holes, alien tech, lizards, fully formed and believable characters.... and something this lacks - humour. Do yourself a favour and check it out, then compare for yourself.
I'm also left confused by the way Cole refers to his characters in so many different ways - first name, last name, rank... It's distracting - stop it please.

I would imagine Mr Bray was cringing as he read this. Scaley lizards with booming growling voices? Really? Hackneyed, unimaginative, boring. Unfortunately goes to prove that just because RC narrates it, doesn't mean it's good.

Very promising start
I have to say I chose this based on the fact that RC Bray narrates the book and I knew nothing of the author previously.
I am pleased to say it was a good choice in my opinion!
Clever writing, good plot development and a rattling good story - oh and a perfect performance from Mr. Bray as always!
I don't like giving too much detail as it can spoil the enjoyment, so just know that if you like a good sci-fi yarn set in current times, you should enjoy this. I am now going to listen to the second book.

Excellent Alien Adventure
I really enjoyed this excellent and very exciting alien attack story, I found the plot very fast paced with believable characters. The idea that we actually have worked with aliens to advance our technology and that we were related to them was really thought provoking.
This audiobook was truly enhanced by the usual excellent narration of R. C. Bray.

Unnecessary and Stupid romance ruined book
Mr. Cole seems to be the kind of author who doesn't have much experience writing about romance. It started with a bang and I thought WOW this is going to be a good one. I couldn't have been more wrong. The romantic relationship in this book ruined it for me. It was poorly written and did not advance the plot in anyway. It was complete sappy crap. "Jake looked into her beautiful crystal blue eyes and fell another day in love with her". Really? Why just another day? Why not another 2 or 3 days? Hell, why not another week or another month? Of course, the female protagonist was the typical beautiful blue eyed bombshell blonde. No brunettes for this author. I couldn't finish the book. I just could not do it. I'd pass over this book for something better written.

I can't stress enough how much I loved this story. this isn't your campy Roland Emmerich alien invasion story, it's smart SciFi, Dean Cole is on fire with this series. R.C. Bray is a genius narrator. he can get inside these characters heads, becoming them, making them all believable, putting the listener in the story. I can't wait for the next audiobook to be released!

As per usual for a great story read by R. C. Bray.
Just great. A new, yet refreshing and simplistic plot. Based on the "Aliens Attack" theme, but not as simple as one might think. There are pre-stories that lend sci-fi credibility. There are post-apocalyptic undertones which do not become overbearing. Good writing. Amazing narration. Fun, interesting more than with a read (listen).

Great narration hampered by terrible writing
I couldn't finish this book. The overall story is okay, not great, not terrible. If you can ignore the way the characters react to terrible things happening you'll be okay. The way the emotional state of the characters is described is just terrible. Time and time again they reach peak emotion in one sentence and then go up another level, and another, and... they should cease to function as human beings at that point. But then they keep going and in the next scene are even more horrified, terrified or disgusted.

the pacing is all wrong
sadly, you have to wait about 2h before things get interesting. by "interesting", i refer to 1. the alien villains making an appearance, and 2. the alien villains being the only interesting characters in the book. sure, there's action in the first two hours, sort of an "x-files lite" episode including a shadowy car chase, but seriously...
it's good for authors to experiment with different parts of a genre in order to develop a compelling storyline, character arcs, and so on; however, successful books have to actually deliver on those elements. this book did not.
it is a hard slog to finish this work...
