About this listen

A story described by Katherine Paterson as "didactic camp", a very funny but also thought-provoking fantasy about the issue of gayness. This controversial tale has given enormous comfort to many young people struggling with their own sexual identity.©1991 Bruce Coville (P)2006 Full Cast Audio Anthologies Anthologies & Short Stories Childhood Education Education Fiction Higher & Continuing Education Literature & Fiction Primary Education Short Story Funny

Editor reviews

Blues piano music begins this remarkable story and appears throughout. Vincent is pushed into a mud puddle by bully Butch, who cruelly utters, "You little fruit, I'll show you not to look at me." Suddenly, handsome Melvin rescues him. Bruce Coville and Full Cast Audio take listeners on an educational journey in which gays are highlighted in blue. Vincent is astonished to see how many well-known politicians and sports and entertainment figures, as well as those from his everyday life, show up in shades of blue. All of the narrators' voices are perfect, with Vincent sounding both young and enthusiastic. Fairy godfather Melvin's voice and delivery are ideal for the timely and important message he delivers to Vincent - and listeners.

A short story of how there are many more gay people than is assumed and also that there are many degrees to sexuality. Also, how many people are actually not 'just fully straight.' Really well told.

Excellent story.
