About this listen

In ALONE IN THE DARK, Karen Rose - the Sunday Times bestselling author of CLOSER THAN YOU THINK - returns with a breath-taking new novel in the Cincinnati series - would you cross the line between danger and desire, justice and revenge? A desperate hunt to find a young girl's killer is about to turn deadly...

Former Army Ranger Marcus O'Bannion and homicide cop Scarlett Bishop have met only briefly but when Scarlett receives a phone call in the middle of the night, she immediately recognises the hauntingly smooth voice asking her to meet him in one of Cincinnati's roughest areas.

On arriving, Scarlett finds the body of a seventeen-year-old Asian girl and Marcus injured. A fierce champion of victims' rights, Marcus claims the young woman was working for an affluent local family and the last time he saw her she was terrified, abused, and clearly in need of help. Having agreed to meet her, both Marcus and the young woman were targeted for death.

As they investigate, Scarlett and Marcus are pulled into the dangerous world of human trafficking where they soon realise they are going to have to become as ruthless as those they are hunting.

Because if they don't, how many other girls may end up alone in the dark?

Critic reviews

Deftly mixes a family crime saga and the horrors of human trafficking into a murder investigation . . . a gripping story
An addictive thriller that will accompany many a reader through a few winter's nights
Karen Rose's strength lies in her characterisation . . . Superb!

What did you like most about Alone in the Dark?

I loved the intricate plot with its twists and turns

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the tight suspense and the well-rounded characters. She draws such defined word pictures that I can clearly imagine all of the main characters.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

This was a really hard choice but I think that the scene in the hospital waiting room when everyone is awaiting news of Stone I think

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Things are never as they seem, people are never who you think

Any additional comments?

This second book in the Cincinnati series is well up to the usual high standard set by the other series she has done. The many interesting characters in this book lead me to hope that there are more books in this series to come.

This is a fabulous story

after listening to and loving the first book in this series I couldn't wait to follow up with this one. to say I was disappointed is a bit of an understatement. the characters were not as likeable, the story wasnt as engaging and some of the decisions certain people made were downright stupid! I'm aware it's a detective/romance book but having your main character (a supposed feisty female, ballbuster type) very quickly making stupid decisions and appearing more interested in the male lead than her job/the case, made it very hard to believe and frankly hard to get behind! I dont think I will be listening to any more unfortunately. if you listened to the first one just leave it there!

meh!!!

Really enjoy the works of Karen Rose but I can't put up the narrator. Her male voices and they way she goes up at the end of every sentence absolutely ruined the book for me.

I felt it was too similar to the first in the Cincinnati series, only this time I wasn't anywhere near as invested.

Narrator Ruins It

Once again Karen Rose knocks it out of the park, plot, details, characters, everything, brilliant!

outstanding

This is the first audio book I have listened to by Karen rose. Think I would prefer to read her books. Found it too long with too much detail about what was going on with the characters who all sighed and rolled their eyes far too many times.
The story line was interesting although a hard topic to listen about.

Good listen but a little too long
