'Two people are less lost than one...'
There is a moment when childhood ends.
For Joseph 'Patch' Macauley and Saint Brown, it comes late one summer as Patch is abducted from their hometown. Devastated, Saint devotes her days to finding her best friend.
Held in total darkness, Patch is hopeless and alone - until he feels a hand in his. Though he never sees the girl, they fall in love. When he escapes, he's left with only her voice and name - and promises to spend the rest of his life searching for her.
As Saint's heart breaks for the boy she lost - and the man he becomes - she will shadow his journey, to uncover the truth behind who took him.
Over a lifetime driven by obsession, Patch and Saint must sacrifice everything for redemption, justice, and, ultimately, love - even if that means losing each other forever...

When Patch goes missing, Faith feels broken, yet never gives up searching for him, even if it means putting herself up as bait before the suspect (i.e. a young kid doing the job the local cops should be doing, but failing miserably.)
The saddest part of this story however, is that when Patch is eventually found, he is damaged emotionally and mentally; yet destined to spend the rest of his life searching for a girl who visited him whilst held in captivity, in total darkness. No-one really knows if she is real or just a figment of his imagination. From her words, Patch has learned to paint, a talent that turns him into a brilliant artist. Sam, the local drunk and womaniser, yet a brilliant character throughout, takes him under his wing and mentors Patch, until a series of bad choices leads him to a life of crime.
This is a story of obsession. A story of love. A story of heart-ache.
With characters developed with depth and feeling, the book is also beautifully written, depicting lovely images of the landscape and the wildlife. At times, I found it hard to listen to, because there was so much tragedy in it, a story that seemed to be leading to nowhere. But it is a story worth sticking to, with unbelievable twists and an ending that filled me with joy.
I also thought the narrator did a fantastic job with all those characters.
A beautifully written coming of age story/thriller
