About this listen

This audio edition is read by Nicholas Ralph, known for his role as James Herriot in the All Creatures Great and Small TV series.

** Now a major TV series on Channel 5 **

Training as an RAF pilot in the smoke and bustle of wartime London is a far cry from James Herriot’s day job as a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales. And whilst he is keen to serve King and country, James cannot help but miss his life in Darrowby – despite frequent arguments between his colleagues Siegfried and Tristan, bad-tempered cattle, opinionated farmers and the continuing saga of Cedric the flatulent dog. But most of all he misses his wife Helen; pregnant with their first child. The question constantly hanging over them is – will he be going to war? And when will he get to go home?

Since they were first published, James Herriot’s memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Things Wise and Wonderful is a heart-warming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain’s best-loved authors.

Critic reviews

Bulls with sunstroke, pigs on the run and a cake-eating Peke with a betting habit . . . I grew up reading James Herriot's book and I'm delighted that thirty years on they are still every bit as charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were then (Kate Humble)
Herriot's enchanting tales of life in the Dales are deservedly classics. Full of extraordinary characters, animal and human, the books never fail to delight (Amanda Owen)
The attraction of Herriot's ever popular memoirs of a country vet . . . is their alternating highs and lows, humour and pathos, and gripping anecdotes about delivering lambs, grumpy farmers, hypochondriac pet-owners, stroppy cows and blunt Yorkshire characters. And, of course, there's a powerful nostalgia element in these stories about our green and pleasant land in the day before the ravages of ribbon development

As per the previous titles in this wonderful Herriot series narrated by Nicholas Ralph. This continuation is s-u-p-e-r-b-l-y narrated by Mr Ralph (no wonder that his Herriot audio versions have been award nominated).👍🏻
Definitely worth the credits for this series narrated by Mr Ralph. Such wonderfully immersive hours of audio pleasure.

Unable to stop listening. Totally immersed in this book, more so than the previous one - found myself switching from laughing out loud, to holding my breath in anticipation. Nicholas Ralph brilliantly brings the characters to life. Can’t wait for the 4th in this series. More TV series too please!

I really enjoy returning to these stories time and time again. Herriot wrote with such warmth and humility. By the time you reach the end of a book, you've experienced nearly every emotion possible.
Nicholas Ralph has already narrated the previous two books in the series. Every time, he just smashes it! His ability to give each character a unique voice is amazing. I've listened to quite a lot of audio books and Ralph is easily my favourite narrator by far.
Highly recommended.
