In Richmond, Virginia, young lovers are dying. So far, four couples in the area have disappeared, only to be found months later as mutilated corpses.

When the daughter of the president's newest drug czar vanishes along with her boyfriend, Dr Kay Scarpetta knows time is short. Following a macabre trail of evidence that ties the present homicides to a grisly crime in the past, Kay must draw upon her own personal resources to track down a murderer who is as skilled at eliminating clues as Kay is at finding them.

One of the stronger early Scarpetta books. The mystery kept me engaged throughout, and I enjoyed the balance of forensic investigation, suspense, and character development. A gripping crime thriller with plenty of twists along the way.

I am surprised no one noticed the parallels Cornwell made with her story to the Colonial Parkway Murders of 1986-1989. Whilst she changed places and a few circumstances, she wrote a fictional who done it on a factual real life serial murders that was never solved. This parallel kept me listening.
I have gotten used to the narrator's accents, although being from Tidewater now Hampton Roads area of Virginia, I am unfamiliar with the "old Virginian" accents she is portraying. She is portraying everyone in Virginia with the old "Southern Gentry" accent that just doesn't exist anymore.
Can't wait to get to book 4. I am re-reading or listening to the series after reading them when they were first publish.

Interesting parallel ...
