A gargantuan horseshoe-shaped ship appears over the mining planet Shānmén, unleashing a black rain of death that creates Xenomorph-like monsters worse than the darkest of nightmares.

As war breaks out among the colonies, a huge ship appears over the UPP mining planet Shānmén, releasing a horror that yields hideous transformations. Rescue is too far away, and the colonists’ only hope appears in the form of the vessel Righteous Fury. It carries the Jackals—an elite mix of former Colonial Marines and Royal Marines. Led by Zula Hendricks, the Jackals seek to rescue the few survivors from the depths of the planet, but have they arrived on time?

Warning

The writing is halting and awkward in places and suffers from too many characters to really let any develop. There are some attempts at cultural references which dont really have a chance to show and dont advance the plot. Not bad, but awkward.

Interesting story but some issues

I can't help feeling like this is the foundation for a coming novel. I would've liked some more xenomorph action, but the lore and insight into what it's like to be a regular worker in this universe balances things out quite nicely.

Light on Xeno action, plenty of world building

a bit slow to get out of the staring gate, but it picks up the pace in the second act. performance was a bit to robotic and tended to detract from the story a bit. sets up what looks like a very good longer story, while referencing back to previous books. Nice way to glue all the story lines into one narrative.

Good story, once it gets going!

I've been stuck on the beginning of the 4th chapter for... more than a week or two now? The narration is atrociously monotone, making it impossible to keep track of any character as they all sound the same. This might also be an issue with the story itself, as it throws a lot at you over a short span of time. Ms. Irons narrates like being chased by one of the aliens herself, and yet manages somehow to lose all the drama in the process.

As a result, I'm unable to listen while outside on a dog walk - for example - because it would take my full attention just to keep track of who says what to whom. So I relegate it to bedtime 15-minute sessions which hardly take me anywhere.

Anyway, the story so far might be ok? Would be unfair to tell at this point. The David(s) model makes a reappearance, and so do the Working Joes, so there is tie-in to what has been world-built up to this point in the franchise. There is your typical sleazy company man in charge to get all the money and put everybody's lives at risk. There's the hardened matriarch who's battling the corrupt establishment just as much as her own ageing. There are guns, miners and mysterious wildlife. Haven't made it to xenomorph stuff this far into the listen, but I do appreciate a slow burner.

Get this title only if you can stomach the narration. Otherwise, stick to stuff read by far more nuanced actors, like Bill Hope or Jefferson Mays.

Possibly interesting story narrated dreadfully
