this is a pretty middle of the road, enjoyable but not exceptional book. the characters are distinct and the story is fun. unfortunately the author has the bad habit of repeating long stat blocks, which just serve to pad the runtime and distract from actual stat changes. instead of being able to follow along with the relevant stats, I just zone out.

the narrators really need to work on their craft. the guy is alright for the most part but the lady has incredibly stilted reading. to the degree that it actually becomes ridiculous.

my only complaint is that every time a skill is checked the whole status is read out, even the parts that haven't changed since the last update. the bit that really get me is that there's a segment at the end of the readout specifically for the parts that have changed.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected. It starts slowly and every now and they jumps to someone else's prospective but only for a few minutes. I was expecting it to do more detail when it swapped, but the few minutes are more than enough and I surprisingly enjoyed it. definitely worth a listen and I'm already getting book 2.
