Summary

From Marie Benedict, best-selling author of The Only Woman in the Room and Lady Clementine, comes a captivating work of historical fiction about a young female spy who may have changed the course of American history.

The tide is turning against the colonists in the Revolutionary War, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Morris cannot sit by idly. Quietly disdainful of her Tory parents, who drag her along to society events and welcome a British soldier into their home during their occupation of New York City, Elizabeth decides to take matters into her own hands. She realizes that, as a young woman, no one around her believes that she can comprehend the profound implications of being a nation at war - she is, effectively, invisible. And she can use this invisibility to her advantage. Her unique access to British society leads her to a role with General George Washington's own network of spies: the Culper Ring.

Based on true events, Agent 355 combines adventure, romance, and espionage to bring to life this little-known story of a hero who risked her life to fight for freedom against all odds.

Should’ve leaned into history or romance

Mostly harmless free novella imagining a lady spy and building on known historical facts during the revolution. In a two hour audio book, this might have succeeded better if the author has stopped there, with more of a pseudo documentary. However, in addition to a historical spy caper, the author also made this a romance book. The resulting novella barely dips a toe into either pool, leaving me with shallow enjoyment of both genres. I think I would have gotten a bit more out of this if I listened to the Author’s Note prior to the book. She primed the historical pump and her clear dedication to uncovering the role of strong women in history placed the novella in more favorable esteem with me. Even better, however, I wish the author had taken the time to write a full length book. Perhaps then the book would have worked as both a historical spy and romance story. (Or, frankly, skip the pale romance and lean in to the more interesting history and spy trade) Emily Rankin’s narration goes down wonderfully smooth as always, and I did learn a few interesting historical tidbits. Plus, it was a free Audible listen. Thus, it still gets a two star “okay” rating.

Decent narration; nails on a chalkboard content

Bad history lesson masquerading as worse entertainment. They should have chosen either to actually teach us the non-fiction story or else chosen to write entertaining historical fiction. This hybrid fails at both. The narration is good but nowhere near enough to make up for its other faults.

Pleasantly not surprised

I just wanted a quick story to occupy me while I was straightening up the house and washing dishes to prepare for company. Ended up greeting and consequently ignoring my company (they're family, they understood; I let my husband and toddler entertain for once, haha) while I finished this entrancing tale. If I had been turning the pages myself, I would have been reluctant to stop. The author fits the story so VERY well into history, that had it not been for the note at the end, I would have immediately set to Google to confirm or deny the authenticity of the story and characters. Thank you, Marie Benedict, for the enthralling and well researched narrative.

interesting story.

A part of history I didn't know. A fictional, though based on a true event, of a woman spy in the Revolutionary War. Make sure you listen to the author's note.

The best kind of historical fiction.

Here, author Marie Benedict looks to reveal a piece of the truth about the founding of the nation. Based on the story of an unknown female spy who was vital in the war, she fashions one possible way that the events could have transpired. Too many heroes are lost to time and secrecy. Stories like this, filled with facts gilded in the beautiful 'may be' of fiction, spark interest in the past for new generations and, more importantly, help make certain that even those heroes who allowed themselves to be used namelessly will never be forgotten.

Fascinating!

This book captivated my imagination and my interest. I listened enthralled to the whole thing in one sitting. I liked the it was short and without wordiness. What a pleasant way to learn history and feeling like I was inside, living the experiences. I appreciated the author notes at the end linking the story with what she had gleaned while admitting it was fiction but with great possibilities. Very enjoyable! I would recommend it to those wanting to understand history from the inside out.

Strong, Brave Woman

Only about 20 min into this recording, I had to stop and text my friend. I told her about this book as she has some strong young women and thought this would be a great story for them. Inspirational! Great story!

Amazing

Wow, what an incredible story told so succinctly. I loved it! I really felt I was back in this time period, in this place and world. Very very moving what this woman did and all that she went through, especially at the end.
