Beware of getting what you have asked to receive

M C Beaton has created a character who resonates with mature ladies. Agatha Raisin is a retired successful business woman who, although formidable on the outside, is putty on the inside, fallible, romantic and unexpectedly feminine. She lives in a Cotswold village and ends up solving murders in the tradition of the Revenger's Tragedy. In this story she has married her next door neighbour, James Lacey after the vicissitudes of courtship, only to find they are incompatible - he expects a dutiful wife, Agatha is not wired that way; her dream has become a nightmare. The inevitable murder occurs, James disappears. Agatha with her friend, the identikit nobleman, Sir Charles Fraith, sets out to find the truth, together with the half Chinese policeman, Bill Wong. The action is hilarious, includes a visit to a monastery in France and the wisdom of the Vicar's wife, Mrs Bloxby. The story is beautifully crafted with more to it than just entertainment and Penelope Keith makes listening to it a delight

Excellent author

The MC Beaton Books are great to listen to . The one I just listened to was from the Agatha Raisin range. I truly enjoyed listening to it. One thing about the audible books is that they also relax you which to me is a great help. I would recommend the audible books to people with sight problems or like me haven’t got the strength in my hand to hold a book, in fact to anybody really you feel more involved in the stories ...........

Enjoyable but very Middle England

If you can stomach the Tory-party-manifesto monologues from the character Charles then you will enjoy it. I struggle with it but still enjoyed the plot and Raisin as a character.

Another good Agatha story

Agatha Raisin, another good story. Keeps you guessing until the very end. The gruff heroine sorting her hap hazard life out but things never go as straight forward as she would like.

Not the strongest in the series

Oh dear, the books are getting weaker as are the characters. Few little mistakes as narrating too

Tedious woman

I tried this one in the series and found Agatha to be quite tedious- stupid, bad tempered and unreasonable. I finished the book though, despite it having such a predictable conclusion.

I do love an Agatha Raisin mystery.

I love Agatha Raisin. She's competent, capable infuriating and deeply human. The mysteries can be a bit silly but that just adds to the charm. I always want to give James Lacey a clip around the ear and love the friendships she has snd how they illuminate her character. Sometimes the writing can be repetitive but some how that adds to the charm too (note ironic repetition) MC Beaton is altogether a very entertaining writer with a sharp eye for human frailty and Agatha Raisin, despite her faults, is my favourite of her characters.

Delightful

Just the job for a few days poorly in bed! PK reads excellently, with different accents and male voices . Having been Agatha in the fab Radio 4 dramatisations, she is THE Agatha for me , reading this unabridged book with aplomb. Will certainly be getting more.

Typical AR. Simple, fun story. Great narration.

The Agatha Raisin novels have now become my guilty pleasure and comfort reading. When I'm too busy, tired or don't feel like reading/listening to anything too complex or deep, I reach for an Agatha Raisin mystery.
The plot is often forgettable and not mysterious at all, occasionally even obvious. However, Penelope Keith's reading is flawless, the characters feel pleasantly familiar, and M.C. Beaton's evocative descriptions of Gloucestershire, London, Norfolk, English seaside etc., bring back many beloved memories. So, I keep listening.
"The Love from Hell" is another typical Agatha Raisin novel, relaxing, predictable, and gorgeously narrated. I knew what to expect. I enjoyed it.
