Summary

Alex is a 36-year-old SAS Captain. Recently commissioned from the ranks, he is returning from a hostage-rescue mission in Sierra Leone when he finds himself summoned back to the UK. Someone, it seems, has been murdering MI5 officers. And murdering them in a particularly gruesome and horrific way. A hammer is involved, as is a skinning-knife. The security services, however, are more concerned with the why than the how. Because it is beginning to look as if the killer is an insider, SAS-trained, one of the Regiment's own. The body count is mounting, and under strict cover of secrecy Alex is ordered to track down and eliminate the killer. To assist him in this task he is assigned an MI5 liaison officer, the attractive but abrasive Dawn Harding. And so begins a deadly and relentless manhunt.

The killer, Alex discovers, was almost certainly an undercover soldier codenamed the Watchman who, in the early '90s, infiltrated the highest levels of the IRA's Army Council. He was, and without doubt remains, a lethally skilful operator. But why is the Watchman slaughtering his way through the upper ranks of the security services? A nightmare chase, a betrayal, and a dawn firefight will all ensue before Alex learns the bitter truth: that in the shadowy battlegrounds of the Intelligence wars there is no good and no evil, there are only winners and losers.

one of his best

I found this book very well written, honest and believable, a cracking good story from start to its jaw dropping conclusion.

Fast pace

If you fancy a fast paced story that's a bit macho Chris Ryan won't disappoint. I have a few on my library and always enjoy - if in the right mood.

wow

I read this book from cover to cover back in 2002! I was staying in Sweden at the time, and was a Kyokushin Uchi Deshi student. I was massive into SAS stories then.
I started reading it in the evening after finishing Tenth Man down. I was up till the early hours, just couldn't put it down! I eventually fell asleep, and when I woke got straight back into it!!
(Actually missed morning training!).

It was great to listen to it after all this time, I,d never forgot that book! The narrater is brilliant, his accents were bang on!

Not as good as the book...

I'm pretty sure this is an abridged version as a lot of the story line seems to be missing from what I thought I remembered. the fact the it's only 3 and a half hours long supports my theory as well.
the story is still good and it was nice to listen to it while driving.
narrator was good and tried to bring life to the characters.
I would listen to it again.

worth reading

Is there anything you would change about this book?

great story, very realistic

Did Christian Rodska do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

yes he did

Could you see The Watchman being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Would be great on TV

Any additional comments?

Its sounds like it was written by someone that knew what the SAS did, great read

so disappointing- not a patch on the book

this title is so abridged that it resembles little of the original book, most of the story is cut out, other Chris Ryan titles are several hours in length which shows just how much of the storyline is missing

expected more

Would you try another book written by Chris Ryan or narrated by Christian Rodska?

didn't really like Christian Rodska's narration and that surprised me as he is a really good actor. Would try another book narrated by him before making final comment.

What will your next listen be?

The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie

Would you be willing to try another one of Christian Rodska’s performances?

will try another to make sure I am not being unfair

What character would you cut from The Watchman?

frankly the whole book was pretty amateurish.
