Summary

With the Treaty of Amiens, England is at peace. At least for now....

Accompanied by his friend, ship’s surgeon and spy Stephen Maturin, Captain Jack Aubrey has returned home to England and the life of a country gentleman. But their comfortable experience is cut short when Jack is made a pauper overnight. He flees to the continent, narrowly escaping debtor’s prison, only to find himself a hunted fugitive from Napoleon’s regime as, yet again, war looms.

Critic reviews

"Outstanding dialogue, characterisation, humour and a golden thread of romance." (Katie Fforde)

"The Aubrey–Maturin novels, by Patrick O’Brian, are so addictive that after I finish one I have to hide the next from myself for a little while in order to do anything else but read." (Louise Erdrich)

Abridged

An Abridged book - bought by accident - and not worth the effort - all the enjoyment of the book surgically removed,

when can we have the full set (of 21) unabridged books?

There are better versions out there

I am reviewing the quality of the audiobook here and not the story. I found this version of "Post Captain: Aubrey-Maturin" hard to follow and not worth the price. There are other unabridged version of this on audio book which have more clarity and do more justice to Patrick O'Brian's work.

terrible narrator

very difficult to get into, narration is terrible, sounds like the narrator is in a hurry to finish. wish I'd taken more notice of the other less favourable reviews. does not do justice to the author's work.

Wonderful book excellently read

A beautifully written book combining detailed historical information and subtle observations of character which could not be read better

The sound quality is s little poor on this version

The cd version's sound quality is better. Why so? Surely it's not a data issue.

Not Master & Commander

Poor - little substance - Just not the film, Robert Hardy drones so even a poor book is not listenable. Pity the exchange scheme was not available at the time of purchase

Post Captin; abridged

The peace with France has come and Jack and Stephen have time for a house, hunting and love. Jack can't decide between the 2 cousins but Stephen knows which one has taken his heart. Diana wants a rich husband, Jack, but prefers talking with Stephen. Sophia loves Jack but won't marry without her mothers permission. Her mother will never let her marry a poor man let alone one in debt so when the money is all stolen away Jack and Stephen must get a ship. Now if only the friends can keep from the old trap of falling out over a woman!
This may be abridged but the reading is excellent and the music is sensitively placed. Well worth the listen.
