Summary

The Moonraker project has a millionaire backer, the war hero Sir Hugo Drax - a man who, it seems, cheats at cards. With a ballistic rocket at stake, Sir Hugo’s exposure could threaten Britain’s latest defence system, so James Bond is asked to investigate. Moving from London’s most exclusive gambling club to a missile silo on the Channel coast, 007 and his Special Branch assistant, Gala Brand, discover there’s more to Drax than meets the eye.

Includes an exclusive bonus interview with Bill Nighy.

Ian Fleming was born in London in 1908. He was educated at Eton and worked as a journalist in Moscow and a banker and stockbroker in London before becoming personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. He wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 at Goldeneye, his home in Jamaica. Since then James Bond has gone on to become a global phenomenon.

Bill Nighy is a multi-award-winning actor who has appeared in many TV dramas, including State of Play, The Girl in the Café and Page Eight, for which he received a Golden Globe Best Actor nomination. He won Best Supporting Actor BAFTA for his role as Billy Mack in Love Actually, while his other films include Pirates of the Carribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and the smash hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

probably the best Bond book

If you've never read a Bond book I think this would be the best place to start; if you don't enjoy Moonraker then you likely won't enjoy any of them. It's an easy read, and quite engaging. I wouldn't sit down and read a book like Moonraker, but it's a great book to zone in and out of while you wash dishes, tidy up, or sit on a bus.

What a turn up for the books!

Would you consider the audio edition of Moonraker to be better than the print version?

This is a fantastic edition wonderfully read by Bill Nighy. His narrative really enhances the story.

What other book might you compare Moonraker to, and why?

Any of the other Bond novels.

What about Bill Nighy’s performance did you like?

His style of delivery and interpretation was superb. I was itching to listen to the next part.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Forget the movie, watch the real deal.

Any additional comments?

Forget the movie, this book is so much better and believable than the movie. The story is gripping and the novel James Bond is more realistic and you can see where Daniel Craig took his interpretation of his character from.

A Great Read

I'm surprised, although I know not why, how much I enjoyed this book. Apart from the names of some of the characters it was unrecognisable to me from the later film of the same title. This was beautifully written with great attention to detail. Although written in 1955, it stands the test of time, albeit that it could easily slip into the "historical thriller" genre. A great read.

Brilliantly written, superbly performed

Thoroughly enjoyable. A brilliantly written thriller, which may surprise you if your only experience of Bond is the cinematic version, and Bill Nighy is a superb narrator.

Brilliant Bond

This is a great reading of a thrilling Fleming book. James Bond at his best. Ok it doesn't have the same feeling as Dr No or Live and Let Die but it's still a great work and Bill Nighy does it justice
