Summary

There have been many Marines. There have been many marksmen. But there has been only one Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, a legend of Marine lore. He stalked the Viet Cong behind enemy lines. His record has never been matched: 93 confirmed kills. This is his story. Powerful, chilling, and all true.

An incredible story of an inspirational man

The audiobook was wonderfully done. I'd seen Carlos Hathcock stories in various lists and blog posts so it was great to delve into much more detail. Laugh out loud funny in parts and heartbreaking in others. An amazing book of a legend who lived and breathed his craft

Superb Story

Well I loved the story for it was true, real and passionate. The narration was excellent. It’s not often that you get a 5 star review from me but this one earned it.

Wow that last mission was TENSE!

This book is all about Americas top sniper in Vietnam. It claims his record remains unmatched, which is if course not true, although it probably was at the time of writing.

The story was pretty good, but the narrator definitely let it down, as is all too often the case. His impressions of various voices deserves a solid 5, but when "the enemy was just feet away from me..." you need to emphasize the fear, it's not the same as "so I was looking up a phone number last week.."

The book starts with a very interesting quote I've heard before in veterans books, describing how taking the lives of the enemy becomes addictive. while this is thankfully difficult for most of us to understand, it no doubt begins to describe marine Sgt Hathcock later stages of this book.

There are also various EXTREMELY graphic descriptions of war, and the things people do to their enemy in such a situation, contained within this book, things that 9/10 such books spare in detail. While it's horrible, it certainly adds to authenticity.

the reason I've only given it 3 stars, aside from the narration, is it feels hollow, and like so much was missing, at various times the story skips out weeks or months, which often contains crucial thoughts and experiences (what happened on the freedom bird for example?)
