Summary

As a powerful insurgent army closes on Liberia's capital, London is forced to act, and HMS Beaufort is dispatched to West Africa to pull British nationals from the teeth of encroaching danger. But when the volatile situation ashore unravels, the frigate's crew must draw deep on reserves of skill, ingenuity and sheer bloody-mindedness to save it. And with time running out, Beaufort's Captain makes the decision to take his ship upriver....

Absolutely superb

This series of books is brilliant. You just can't put them down. Gripping, heroic and humourous , they are beautifully narrated. I'll be sorry to finish the four..

Cracking story

No 2 in the series continues with the same excellent form as book 1. Although this story takes us in a different direction with new characters they are created with the same level of excellence as before.
Having read a host of military memoirs on the trot it has been refreshing to read the works of such an excellent author.
I look forward to book 3 in the series with zeal.

So well done!

This is a book that I thought would be rather hung-ho and unthinking, but it is far more than that. Build around well rounded characters with a pace that never lets up and gives a genuine insight into comradeship.

Another ripping yarn.

overall, though too much attention to each of the players initially, the plot and action was an exciting, well delivered piece of writing.

This series is the best

Started with book 1 after which purchased the whole 4 of the series only listened to the first 2 yet but, see no reason why the remaining 2 should be any different - wish there were another 100 as well written as these would have no hesitation in buying them all at one go - sadly that will never be the case -can't remember last time I was so emotionally affected****************plus

Boys Own Nonsense

This is an unconvincing poorly written story that suffers badly from being written in the 1990s and the world has moved on so much. The writing is not strong enough to make it an interesting period piece. The depiction of other ranks is risible and the officers diplomats etc are so cliched. The action is ok but the author grafts in weapon descriptions that sound like they were copied from an instruction manual. The best writers of military fiction weave in these details. There is a limp attempt at a twist and some love interest that is cringeworthy. The reader is very good at voices and the narration well paced but any acronym and in a military novel there are many he speaks in a stilted clunky way that ruins the flow. There are many better authors of military fiction don't waste your time on this stilted piece of jingoistic nonsense.

Outstanding listen

A brilliantly written fictional account of of a Royal Navy action to rescue British and American nationals from a civil war. The characters are well drawn and the writing is superb - didn't want it to end

King's Shilling

I was so happy to find this series about the British Navy and the RNLI. These are excellent stories which make the books hard to put down. They are well-written and well researched, . Too bad there are only 4 in the series. Mike has passed away now-unfortunately. Some of the scenes of the storm in book 1 are truly thrilling. Mike must have been out in some bad weather conditions to get this right. For anyone who loves the sea, book 1 is a must
