Summary

A great throwback
This reminded me of my time as a child reading the Sharpe novels, would recommend highly for anyone who enjoys the like.

Excellent historical fiction, brilliant narrator
(I rarely give 5 star reviews...)
Outstanding historical fiction, set in an unusual but fascinating period. The book covers both naval and land actions, and more interestingly, the political and religious intrigues that Britain faced in the aftermath of a horrific civil war.
Special praise for the narrator - one of the best I've heard. Full of energy and passion for the story, he has a great range of character voices and accents that rally helped bring the story to life.
Thoroughly recommended!

Entertaining and accurate
A very enjoyable first installment to the series, and would like to have the rest of the novels recorded, please.
The performance is marked down as there were a few wrong pronunciations, but the characters were clear, and the storyline gripping and entertaining with very human reactions.

I really
enjoyed this book,I love the history lessons all the way through,nothing is as black and white as it looks,rebels,traitors,royalist and republican,100 shades of grey still,that was an Ulster accent the Countess had though,lookin' fwd to a sequel.

Excellent!
Engaging story, started slow but had to, to place the characters. Graphic description of sea battles. Excellent narration as always by Jonathan Keeble.
Can’t wait to listen to next book in the series.

Great all round book. A wonderful way to travel back in time.
The book was excellently written giving the reader a great journey to follow. You can’t help but learn a huge amount about the navy of that time while you follow the story. All-in-all definitely worth a listen!!

Amazing! exciting and well crafted. More please.
I love this book. It's a beautifully written and exciting tale of historical events new to me. J D Davies is expert on naval events of the period. I read his book, Pepys Navy to ensure I wasn't buying fantasy in the guise of historical fiction. I needn't have worried. This is accurate, literate and hard to switch off when life makes listening impossible. There lies the only problem. I want to hear more but Audible only has this book so far. I am looking forward to listening to it again and will keep hoping for more.
As a side issue - fans of the excellent narrator Jonathan Keeble may be relieved (I was) that the voice used in the sample is not used throughout. There's a reason for it but I don't want to reveal part of the plot in a review. Mr Keeble is as terrific as ever providing a great many voices, accents and emotions which are beautifully paced with a sensitivity and understanding that adds greatly to the listener's enjoyment.
I can't recommend this book highly enough.
