Publisher's Summary

When a group of missionaries get caught up in bloody African civil war, London is forced to act. For the men of 40 Commando, Royal Marines, it should be a quick in and out. A nice clean operation. But what awaits them will test them like never before. And, facing overwhelming odds, this time the skill and raw courage of these legendary fighting men may not be enough....

"A story of heroism and faith"

Having just finished Long Reach I didn't think another story could match that....his wrong was I? Superb storytelling, superbly narrated, what a shame there are no more Mike Lunnon-Wood stories, I could read this mans books till the end of time.

"Thrilling, brutal and an almost true account."
What did you like most about Congo Blue?

I enjoyed the whole mercenary scene. Having lived 'next door' to Katanga during the 1960s I can relate to the stories of the brutality and sheer horror of the attacks on missionaries working there. Many of the names and places are familiar and is it sad to think that nothing has changed. The marines and soldiers fighting there were as described in the story. Very accurate in all details of weapons used and the people involved. Never a dull moment but so close to the reality of this war torn zone.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I had no favourite character, maybe the stray dog or the old African.

What about John Telfer’s performance did you like?

Everything. He was never over-the-top nor was he boring. I often buy a book according to the narrator. Must check out more of his work.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but didn't manage. I am able to listen more while travelling and I haven't done much lately.

    Any additional comments?

I am a woman but enjoy this type of story. Maybe it's more of a man's book. I loved every moment of it but I suspect it is because of the familiarity of the setting and much of it brought back memories of that period although I never saw any of the violence described, we had heard about it and the border of Katanga was about 11 miles (in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia) from where we lived. Descriptions of the bushvelt were accurate and good.

    "THE beat bar none"

Mike Lunnon-Wood has to be the finest adventure writer. As a former Royal Marine he capture the characters, the slang, the humour and his research was immense. Having a character called Hobson (my own surname) also ticked a box.
This actors performance was simply superb too. But it! Borrow it! Share it!

    "Top war story"

A brilliant story of Royal Marines at war, a terrific war story, very well read. This is one of a series of four books and all seem to be winners so far.

    "Stunning."

Great book. First Lunnon-wood book experienced. The start where the characters are built up got a little bit tricky to recall everyone but then all of a sudden the story flows and you've got this rich knowledge of all the characters- they feel real and the tapestry of the storey and journey is excellent. It's emotional and kick ass all at the same time. Looking forward to the next book.

"Shame this enjoyable series has come to an end"

An enjoyable final book in what has been an excellent series. The ending lacked something for me other than it was an excellent book with, again, the writers attention to accurate detail shining through.
