Summary

Acquired Tastes, originally published as Expensive Habits, is a celebration of life's extravagances. It explores an aspect of human nature that, although dormant in hard economic times, is capable of erupting with the hint of good fortune and the drop of a credit card. It samples the luxuries of Havana cigars, Parisian hotels, bespoke London tailoring, and handmade shoes; discusses the proper color for a stretch limousine; and weighs the cost versus the pleasure of keeping a mistress. The proper way to eat true caviar is explained while providing the listener with hours of pure, unadulterated escapism.

Perfect narration, brilliant writing and lovely music in between chapters. I loved every second and will listen again and again.

Loved every bit

The content seems to date back to 1970s / 1980s but things stay true despite the passage of time. I especially enjoyed the voice of the narrator - Robin Sachs. I am going to search for his other works at audible for sure.

Witty and hilarious

If you’re bleeding heart liberal, look away now. You’ll likely hate every single thing about this. If you’re not, or just happen to have a good sense of humor and want to hear about the finer things in life, that most people just aren’t aware of these days, then it’s worth the listen. It’s quick and funny. It’s obviously dated, but I still enjoyed it. I even added a few things to my bucket list I’d like to experience, after listening to this audio book.

So Much Fun!

This was a pleasure to hear. Regardless if you may or may not be able to live in this style, it is a reminder of treating YOURSELF to luxuries, on whatever level you may be afforded.

It was a delight and I giggled quite a bit!

tongue-in-cheek humor!

Clever, witty, slightly sarcastic and very entertaining! Chapter 5 regarding Lawyers is the best! Narrated perfectly!

Wonderfully witty and dry

Somewhere between PG Wodehouse and Oscar Wilde, this is such an enjoyable audiobook. Narrated perfectly.

Much ado about not too much

This is apparently supposed to be an arch and witty expose of the excesses of the rich. Nope. The first chapter in custom-made shoes sets the tone: florid wording and breathless narration that struggles mightily to mock a mundane if slightly pricey footwear purchase. Next, an equally strained peek behind the tinted windows of stretch limousines. Some even have TVs and wet bars, imagine that, Ma!

delightful

Peter Mayle writes a delightful, colorful and characteristically droll account of what it's like to lead the life of a wealthy European some decades ago. His descriptions are always fun, and that of the legal profession is a hoot.

Trite

If you enjoyed the first two "Provence" books this title holds promise of an excursion into satirical yet appreciative observation...alas!...not so in this effort. This piece is uninspired, disenchanted & feels like an effort to satisfy publishers to whom Mayle has been obliged to squeeze out a little more creative juice. This lemon is dry, uninspired & out of date even in it's own time; this is likely the reason why this turkey comes "free" with your membership.
Mayle wrote some insightful & charming observations of character, regional eccentricity & the wide swath of human behavior one can enjoy in fellowship with others in trade for enjoyment of an enchanting life but this book clearly appears to be more of an obligation to produce something...anything. I want to pretend it never happened.
And...the narration was more like a reading aloud...it, too, never happened. Alors...
