Summary

Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets...and secrets hide in every shadow

Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school - and her reputation - behind to follow her mother's trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.

Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected - he's a street lord and con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn't have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne's offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems. Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos and illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless Mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi's enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city...and she'll need to play.

What a start

I really enjoyed Daughter of the Burning City last year so I couldn't wait to listen to this. Were my expectations met? Yes and much more! Thanks to some great narration I was sucked straight into the world of New Reynes and despite how dark and dingy the world felt I didn't want to leave. I loved the complexity of the world and the magical realism as well as the characters. The whole time spent there felt so real and I can't wait to see what's next for Enne, Levi and all the other characters who find themselves in New Reynes.

Trite story, unfortunate narration choices

The story starts moderately interesting, albeit with weak characters whose traits aren't notable enough to be in a novel. Unfortunately by the end, the magic system is just a vague smudge of mashed up tropes, the characters get even less likeable and more boring, and the plot is meh. The author tries really hard to make them clever and cool but their decisions are dumb and their so called coolness is laughable. Example: the MC is sent by a mob lord to poison Cedric, another mob lord. It turns out the "poison" isn't meant to kill him but make him throw up. How is that poisoning? I think the author wanted the MC to be badass but didn't have the guts to make her really DO something.

The narrator also made poor decisions, such as making the 18yo city con Levi to sound like a 50yo Irish peasant. This made the poorly cobbled up romance fall even flatter, and go from the land of no chemistry to that of seeming pedophilia.

I was able to finish the book but listened to the last 10 mins on 2x speed. Will not return to this trilogy and possibly not to the author either.

Good idea but not sure if it was executed well

I did enjoy the story but many of the concepts were hard to follow. Great performance and likeable characters

Different than usual

Amazing story! Very different than usual fantasy. Creative and captivating. The characters are complex, the diversity is increasingly welcomed!

really wasnt a fan of the characters much but i did enjoy the worldbuilding even if it was sort of thin. the plot was just okay didn't dislike or like it much. it's pretty much just your typical YA sort of story

almost dnf it but i pushed till the end because im not a quitter! good for just putting on in the background as its an easy listen
