Summary

"Kilian Jornet is the most dominating endurance athlete of his generation." (New York Times

"Inspiring and humbling." (Alex Honnold)

The most accomplished mountain runner of all time contemplates his record-breaking climbs of Mount Everest in this profound memoir - an intellectual and spiritual journey that moves from the earth’s highest peak to the soul’s deepest reaches.

Kilian Jornet has broken nearly every mountaineering record in the world and twice been named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. In 2018 he summitted Mount Everest twice in one week - without the help of bottled oxygen or ropes.

As he recounts a life spent studying and ascending the greatest peaks on earth, Jornet ruminates on what he has found in nature - simplicity, freedom, and spiritual joy - and offers a poetic yet clearheaded assessment of his relationship to the mountain...at times his opponent, at others, his greatest inspiration.

Critic reviews

"Kílian’s motivation isn’t what you might imagine. It has nothing to do with race results. And his happiness derives not from victory. Instead, it’s adventure that sparks Kílian’s joy. Immersion in nature. Living outside the comfort zone. And always, always exploring." (Rich Roll)

Good book but maybe not the best audiobook

I love the stories of Kilian and the way he talks about the various sports he enjoys, and I also very much enioyed listening to this book. However, i missed a bit of general storyline. I also thought it was hard to follow chronologically. Part of this was because the audiobook did not seem to have an appropriate pauze or stop before a new chapter starts! Which made the transition into a new chapter (and thereby a new story or situation) very hard to understand. I would recommend to just read the book on paper. I did enjoy this book even more than his first one 'run or die' as this book was more diverse in my opinion.

Who doesn’t like hearing from Kilian?

Kilian’s writing keeps getting better. This one sheds some insight into the mind of the mountain running G.O.A.T., the things that make him tick, and some cool stories from adventures around the world.

Pretty Good, lacking depth

I enjoyed this book primarily because I already have a keen interest in KJ and have followed a lot of the stories included in the book through different media in the past, and this gives a more detailed account of those moments. The book was good, I particularly like how honest he is about certain things, which is quite funny as you would expect many people to be more diplomatic when talking about these subjects, which is refreshing. The main issue is that it still feels fairly brief and superficial, although this could just be because perhaps he does live a very simple and driven life, so there could just be not much else to the story than what he is telling... Overall an enjoyable listen, but | don't feel as though I will take the time to listen again.

Shame about the narration

Unfortunately the over dramatic narration made this unlistenable. Kilans story is fascinating and I will be buying the paper book as couldn't make it through the audio.

A bit too much psychobabble

I have always enjoyed watching the brilliance of Kilian in his pursuits in the mountains and in racing. It would have been great if he stuck to telling the story of his unique experiences. But he often wandered off in some preachy, judgemental psychobable as if they were universal truths that applied to everyone. Obviously, it oozed of a childish understanding of the world. Kilian defintely has great experiences which the world would like to hear. Hopefully in future books, he will stick to that.

Great insight and good stories

Kilian’s success in mountaineering and ultra running is well known. This book dives into his life, his approach to the mountains, and his view of what it means to be a world class athlete in the ultra endurance field. Solid read and would recommend to others who have interest in the outdoors as well as those seeking wisdom regarding ultra endurance sports.

Could not finish.

This book is so boring and monotone. I could not stay awake. There is nothing even close to interesting in the first three chapters. Trying to figure out how to return and get credit back.

Interesting

Interesting but not very profound. At times it felt somewhat lackluster like a 'page-filler' effect.
