About this listen

Martha, the youngest daughter of fanatically religious parents, is all too aware that her family is unusual. Taunted and bullied at school, and lonely at home with only postcards from her elder sister to keep her sane, Martha knows there has to be some other way of living. But it is only when she is befriended by the new boy, Scott, that she decides to reveal the terrible secret that has so far kept her in emotional chains.©1998 Robert Swindells. Editor reviews

Twelve-year-old Martha makes her first friend at school. But her ultra-religious parents forbid him to come over, lest he discover their shocking secret…The Abomination! Amanda Hulme's performance is absolutely delightful. Her voice is sweet and ethereal, perfect for Martha. Still, she effectively modulates her tone to give Scott, Martha's new friend, his own distinct voice. It's easy to get lost in Hulme's enchanting performance, and young listeners certainly will be transported. Hold on to your hat, though, because this thriller has some twists along the way!

I think the story was set in the UK but the main character seemed to travel the globe via Australia.

Good story.
