Summary

The ARES Virus ran rampant throughout the world, leaving very few remaining. There are no sanctuaries in the midst of the infected, where the very air is contaminated. For the few surviving, the slightest misstep can introduce the viral agent into their midst, bringing an end to the last vestige of humankind. However, there's too much at stake to merely hover in the shadows.

Remnants of the navy survive the catastrophe, but humankind has never been able to live for long periods upon the world's oceans. Even in current times, with advances in medicine and technology, this still holds true. The survivors must find a secure location, but first they must make safe the constructions of the past. Not only do they have the agent to contend with, but there exists a ticking time bomb. Without power, the cooling ponds of the nuclear plants will fail, breathing a cloud of poison across the skies.

Emily finds herself surrounded and alone again. There were people who came to help the first time. Now she has to free herself from the city.

Sergeant Brown faces yet another predicament. Does he have the energy to escape again? Will his luck finally run out?

Great book

I'm a big fan of John O'Brien's A New World series. For fans of that series I'd say this is similar but has a stronger emphasis on the military side of things. I enjoyed the story. It had great characters and an interesting arc. I recommend.

Enough already.

I like This writer but writing a story and writing just to create hours of audible recordings to turn a story into an opportunity to sell 3, 4 or 10 "books" - as an audible devotee - really ticks me off. That's what this and the next one feels like.

This book and so far the next one feels like the author is just making money off readers and certainly not demonstrating any respect for his readers.

The author did a decent job on the young girl in the first book. But thereafter she becomes a caricature, which is also irritating.

Military retaking of the country can be interesting - but not when there aren't any characters you care about. Just military maneuvers one after another through the eyes of a couple of suddenly introduced soldiers you care nothing about.

So disappointed. If I had one message for the author it would be to maintain respect for his readers and to stop insulting them by writing word upon word until you have enough to make an audiobook without taking any effort to develop storylines or any characters to care about other than cardboard cut outs that have us all rolling our eyes.

Too much Government and military

there was not enough information about the characters that we heard about in the first book. it droned on and on about military manovers.

Awesome continuation of the 1st book as the world is living hell of the dead. Seen from all walks of survivors.

going to have to say I wasn't that impressed

so the thing I think I did not care for about this book is it felt just like a book. It was so much narration in this book. I think it took from the storyline. I would have much more enjoyed more dialogue between the characters. in other books that I've listened to the narrator will change voices a lot more, you get more immersed in the book. Not so much with this one. I not even sure I'm going to go for the next one in the series.

WoW!

Great follow up from book One. This was an insane ride! So much going on in this book.
I'm really not into books with a lot of Military presence, I tend to get lost and bored but some how John O'Brien has written this in away I actually enjoyed. On to book 3!

Fantastic!

John has done it again! Great follow on from the first book, the story really draws you in and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Mark would have to be one of my favourite narrators although wish he had used more specific voices for the characters as he has done in the past, but still great narration. This is a must read series!
