Summary

It came from deep space. It sent the signal. Now our computers are killing us, helping the enemy drive us into extinction.

But some of us refuse to die. We fight back. We learn.

Jon Hawkins revives from cryogenic sleep in a drifting SLN battleship. The crew is dead and the main computer has been destroyed. Jon is a soldier, the start of the resistance, the one man with the will to beat the alien death machines that have terminated 1000 races.

This is our hour as we face the ultimate evil, the galactic destroyer of life.

Not the most original but worth a listen

To cut a 9hr story short; it's the Terminator universe in space.

But It was worth the time i spent listening to it and i fully intent to buy and listen to the other books in the series.

He said, she said

I would like a pound for every “said” that was used in this book. Narration also got annoying. Story was good, it was just the way the narrator chose how to voice the characters.

When was this written?

I wanted to enjoy this book as the subject matter is of great interest to me at the moment, however I found the whole thing confusing.

Spoilers ahead.

Firstly there are Communist Secret Police in the future? That didn't make sense to me, so I figured the writer lived in the Eastern Bloc in the 80s or something, however that's not true, so why are they in there?

The narration is like something from an American 50s radio play, making the characters seem so shallow, so black and white.

The story is kind of interesting, but nothing very imaginative.

I'll skip the other books in the series.

Ok to a point.

This review has mild spoilers. It's one of those listen that in the first couple of hours you think "I'm really enjoying this".
Our heroes back story and how he was introduced to us, i really liked, giving us good exposition. The story kind of plodded along, during this period, i would have liked to have found out more about our hero. At no point was i told his age or given any real information about what he looks like. I guess he just a 6ft square jawed white guy.
To me what really turned this story from a ok listen to a bad one, was the Ex Machina about two thirds through. The "help" literally came from nowhere.
Sorry mate, really good idea, but poorly executed.

Not bad good battles, if a bit simple

OK, nice series start, similar to his other books ie
big super ship over taken by humans , now going to do battle with baddies. it's my kind of thing though a bit flat chacter wise compared to expeditionary force books.

Sort of enjoyable

I’m not really sure whether I liked this story or not. The concept was good but the execution was not so good. I was gritting my teeth at times with frustration but hoped it would get better. I don’t think I will bother with the next book.

The narration was amazing and quite frankly saved the book in my opinion.

Not great, very obvious

Half-hearted amalgamation of different common science fiction motifs with some army stuff thrown in. All the characters act as if they had the intelligence of a four year old.
