Summary

The story of Paxton, an antiquarian and archaeologist who holidays in "Seaburgh" and inadvertently stumbles across one of the lost crowns of Anglia, which legendarily protect the country from invasion.

Montague Rhodes James was a noted British mediaeval scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905–1918) and of Eton College (1918–1936). He is best remembered for his ghost stories which are widely regarded as among the finest in English literature.

One of James's most important achievements was to redefine the ghost story for the new century by dispensing with many of the formal Gothic trappings of his predecessors, and replacing them with more realistic contemporary settings.

'Montague Rhodes James has an intelligent and scientific knowledge of human nerves and feelings; and knows just how to apportion statement, imagery, and subtle suggestions in order to secure the best results with his readers.' HP Lovecraft.

Actor David Suchet is best known for his definitive portrayal of Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective created by the legendary mystery author Agatha Christie, in a number of international television productions. He narrates his story in Poirot and Me.

M.R. James is one of those classic authors that will still be listened to hundreds of years from now. This story is a good example of his style and themes, so if you don't know him yet, dive in.

As far as the narrator goes, I wish he'd do more books! Suchet is a gifted actor so it is no surprise that his narration is wonderful. He also has a naturally warm and lovely voice and timbre. It's a perfect match for this tale.

Wonderful story elevated by a great narrator

A story within the story which slowly builds from gentle holiday excitement to creeping fear. Beautifully written and made the more more chilling by David Suchet's down played narration.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Wonderfully told by David Suchet. Every scene was so vividly painted by both the writer and the reader that you felt you were there, a spectator to the mystery as it unfolded.

I didn't think it was scary in the least. a little predictable and old fashioned but a good listen nonetheless. You can't beat David Suchet as a narrator of the mysterious. Would recommend.
