About this listen

An academy of magic and science. Another focused on military excellence. Deadly secrets await - secrets that lead to murder.

Everson is brilliant, ingenious, and yet, he feels broken. Cursed with a disability, he dreams of nothing more than being useful.

Quinn is bold, defiant, and will do anything to protect her brother.

When Everson is sent to an academy of magic and engineering, Quinn joins a military school to remain near her brother. However, things within the fabled institutions are not what they seem. Beneath a mantra of good intentions and the objective of a better future, spies and conspiracies lurk.

Quinn becomes embroiled in a struggle she doesn't understand - one with dire consequences as her training shifts from difficult to deadly. Her relentless determination might help her survive. If she only knew whom she could trust.

Within the other school, Everson learns about a dangerous power known as Chaos. Unable to wield this magic, he focuses on melding Chaos with science, dreaming up inventions that would shape the future. Perceptive, imaginative, and curious, his endeavors lead him to a revelation that could change the world.

And then, he discovers the truth.

A Warden's Purpose had me from the first page, from the moment we are introduced to Everson as he sits there, being interrogated for something of which we are still unaware, and he looks down at his thin, twisted, and useless legs. Goodness, my heart bled already by then. And I absolutely loved him throughout the book.

But he wasn't the only fantastic character in this story.

As Everson is accepted into an academy to do engineering, his whole family ends up travelling to the city, and his sister Quinn enrols in a military school nearby. And she is something to behold, people! Sweet, kind, nurturing, but badass, strong, and stubborn, Quinn is a force to be reckoned with. I loved her from the moment she appeared, much like her brother. Their stories are different but similar, with them finding their place in their individual schools and making friends (and enemies) while pouring their heart and soul into their training. Of course, events soon take a darker turn and place them in danger, where not everyone around them is who they thought they were. And the threads are expertly weaved together, as the true enemies are revealed by the end. Fantastic!

I devoured this book (or audiobook, more accurate), and sure, I ended up having time at work doing a long drive and whatever else, but whenever I set my phone aside, I looked forward to the next time I could pick it back up, only to find out what happened next. For someone who prefers adult, darker fantasy, this YA had me hooked in a way I seldom experience. I can, therefore, safely recommend it to any YA lovers out there. Trust me; this one is brilliant.

Absolutely brilliant YA fantasy!
