A troll in a pinstriped suit walks into a bar. He's looking for Alex Southerland, private investigator and summoner of elementals. There isn't a lot more to say than that this book is a lot of fun. Written in a classic noir style, but with elements of urban fantasy seamlessly woven through, it has fantastic pacing and fun characters. The performance is great, and the narrator and author do not take themselves too seriously, This will be a delight for fans of Chandler and Pratchett, although the book is perhaps more tonally similar to Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series, wry and with a modern urban setting. While not as deep in characterization or emotional resonance as the aforementioned, still a thoroughly enjoyable book and a proper page-turner.
